Procedure: A 200 g (1.64 mol) portion of 2,4-toluenediamine, 162 g (1.23 mol, 2.45 equiv) of dicyclopentadiene, 200 g (2.78 mol) of pentane, and 20.0 g of an amorphous alumina-silica catalyst comprised of 13% alumina and 87% silica were charged to a 1000 cc pressure vessel equipped with a mechanical stirrer. The vessel was sealed and purged with nitrogen leaving a 32 psig nitrogen blanket. The vessel contents were heated to 205° C. with stirring and were maintained at that temperature for 22 hr. The contents were cooled to 150° C. and isolated catalyst free by hot filtration. Selective removal of residual hydrocarbons by vacuum distillation and analysis by gas chromatography (GC) revealed the following product mixture: were charged to a 1000 cc pressure vessel equipped with a mechanical stirrer The vessel was sealed purged with nitrogen leaving a 32 psig nitrogen blanket were maintained at that temperature for 22 hr The contents were cooled to 150° C. isolated catalyst free by hot filtration removal of residual hydrocarbons by vacuum distillation and analysis by gas chromatography (GC)

Procedure: 2,4-Dichloro-5-fluoropyrimidine (50 mg, 0.30 mmol) was dissolved in a mixture of MeOH (1 ml) and H2O (0.1 ml). 3-amino-4-methylaniline (146 mg, 1.2 mmol) was added and the mixture was refluxed for 20 hours (70° C. oil-bath temperature). The mixture was cooled to 22° C., concentrated to dryness under reduced pressure and subjected to column chromatography on silica gel (CHCl3-Acetone, 2:1) to give N2,N4-bis(3-amino-4-methylphenyl)-5-fluoro-2,4-pyrimidinediamine. 1H NMR (CD3OD): δ 8.11 (d, 1H, J=5.1 Hz), 7.98 (bs, 1H) (7.68 (dd, 1H, J=2.4, 8.1 Hz), 7.40-7.55 (m, 4H), 2.43 (s, 3H), 2.42 (s, 3H); LCMS: purity: 95.0%; MS (m/e): 338.66 (M+, 70). The mixture was cooled to 22° C. concentrated to dryness under reduced pressure

Procedure: A solution of AlCl3 (1000 mg, 7.5 mmol) in toluene (3 ml) and acetonitrile (3.0 ml) at 0° C. under an atmosphere of argon is treated dropwise with a solution of 3-amino-4-methyl-aniline (470 mg, 6.0 mmol) in toluene (6 ml). The resulting brown solution is heated at 40° C. A solution of 4-(4-methyl-piperazin-1-ylmethyl)-benzoic acid methyl ester (745 mg, 3.0 mmol) in toluene (2 ml) is then added dropwise over a period of 30 min. The resulting mixture is stirred at 40° C. for 8 hrs and then cooled at 0° C. An aqueous saturated potassium-sodium tartrate (30 ml) and aqueous saturated NaHCO3 (40 ml) and t-butyl methyl ether (60 ml) are added sequentially. The organic phase is separated and washed with aqueous saturated NaCl. The aqueous phases are back-extracted with t-butyl methyl ether. The organic phases are combined, dried over MgSO4 and concentrated in vacuo. Purification by flash-chromatography (SiO2, CH2Cl2/MeOH 90:10+1% aq. NH3) gives 825 mg of the title compound (75%) as yellowish crystals. cooled at 0° C The organic phase is separated washed with aqueous saturated NaCl The aqueous phases are back-extracted with t-butyl methyl ether dried over MgSO4 concentrated in vacuo Purification by flash-chromatography (SiO2, CH2Cl2/MeOH 90:10+1% aq. Procedure: A flask was equipped as in Example 1. To a solution of maleic anhydride (1.7 parts) in 3.9 parts acetone was added a solution of 1 part 4-methyl-m-phenylenediamine, 0.28 part triethylamine and 2.5 parts acetone. The heterogeneous reaction mixture was stirred at 40° C. for 30 minutes. Magnesium chloride hexahydrate (0.071 part) and 2.16 part acetic anhydride were added all at once. The reaction temperature was raised to 50° C. and maintained for 2.5 hours. Thirty minutes after the addition the mixture became homogeneous and remained so. The solution was cooled, and 16 parts water was added; the precipitated product was filtered by vacuum filtration, washed with water, and dried in a vacuum oven at 60° C. for 24 hours. N,N'-(4-Methyl-m-phenylene)dimaleimide, m.p. 168°-172° C., was obtained in 85% yield. A flask was equipped as in Example 1 The reaction temperature was raised to 50° C. maintained for 2.5 hours Thirty minutes after the addition the mixture The solution was cooled the precipitated product was filtered by vacuum filtration washed with water dried in a vacuum oven at 60° C. for 24 hours
