Procedure: Commercially available (Aldrich Chemical Co.) 2-vinylaniline can be dissolved in dichloromethane containing triethylamine and can be treated at 0° C. with dichloroacetyl chloride to yield 2.2-dichloro-N-(3-vinylphenyl)acetamide.

Procedure: BCl3 (67.8 mL, 1.0 M in hexanes) was added to a solution if 2-vinylaniline (5.3 g, 44.3 mmol) in 40 mL of anhydrous toluene at 0° C.
