Procedure: To a solution of 2-Sec. butylphenol (1.5 g, 0.01 mole) 0.2 ml of Et3N was added under stirring. S-methyl ester of N-methylcarbamothioic acid (1.05 g, 0.01 mole) in acetonitrile (10ml) was added dropwise over a period of 4 hrs, keeping reflux temperature. After 30 hr, acetonitrile was evaporated under vacuum. The residue was taken in dichloromethane (25 ml), washed with water and a 5% cold NaOH solution, followed by water and brine and dried over sodium sulphate. After removal of the solvent, the liquid residue obtained was further purified by distillation to give 2-Sec. butylphenyl N-methylcarbamate of the formula VI; IR: 3329 (N--H), 1730 (--COO), 1535, 1490 and 750 (aromatic); PMR (CdCl3, 90 MHz): 0.81 (3H, 1, primary methyl of side chain), 1.18 (3H, d, J=7 Hz, secondary/methyl of side chain), 1.58 (2H, m, methylene protons of side chain), 2.88 (4H, doublet overlapping a multiplet, NH--CH3 and benzylic proton), 4.97 (1H, br s, N H) and 6.95 to 7.25 (4H, m, aromatic). keeping reflux temperature acetonitrile was evaporated under vacuum washed with water dried over sodium sulphate After removal of the solvent the liquid residue obtained was further purified by distillation

Procedure: In a round flask provided with stirrer, thermometer, an introduction tube for phosgene and a reflux cooler operating at about -30° C a mixture of 150 g of o-sec.-butylphenol and 4 g of N,N,N',N',-tetramethyl urea was heated at 100° C and phosgene was introduced to such a degree that the phosgene reflux in the deep-freezing cooler did not increase so much as to reduce the sump temperature. After a reaction time of about 5 hours and a phosgene consumption of about 190 g the reflux cooler was replaced by a descending cooler so that the greatest part of the excess phosgene could be separated from the reaction mixture by distillation. The rest of phosgene was blown out with dry nitrogen. Thus, a yield of about 97% of chloroformic acid-o-sec.-butyl-phenyl-ester was obtained which was practically free from the starting product (GC). In a round flask provided with stirrer reflux in the deep-freezing cooler did not increase so much as After a reaction time of about 5 hours and a phosgene consumption of about 190 g the reflux cooler could be separated from the reaction mixture by distillation

Procedure: Dehydration of fructose in aqueous solutions to obtain 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) is carried out using mineral acids, such as HCl. An organic extracting solvent, 2-sec-butylphenol (SBP), is used to extract HMF continuously to separate it from fructose and the mineral acid and to inhibit further degradation. The experiments were carried out in 10 mL glass reactors at 170° C. in a pre-heated oil bath using magnetic stifling. In a typical experiment, an aqueous fructose solution with a desired weight percentage was prepared to obtain a 0.1 M HCl and saturated with NaCl. The aqueous fructose solution and SBP were added into the glass reactor to reach the desired mass ratio (aqueous layer (g)/SBP (g)). To end the reactions, the glass reactors were taken out from the oil bath and cooled in an ethylene glycol/dry ice bath. The two phases were then separated and analyzed to quantify HMF and fructose using HPLC. Using 1.5 g of aqueous solution (7.8% fructose) and 3 g of SBP, at 170° C., in 5 min, 74% yield of HMF was obtained with complete conversion of fructose. 97% of HMF was retained in SBP. Short residences times are used to minimize the conversion of HMF to LA in this step. cooled in an ethylene glycol/dry ice bath The two phases were then separated

Procedure: A mixture comprising 290.6 g of 65% nitric acid and 800 g of glacial acetic acid is cooled to 0° C., and at 0° to 4° C. there is added in the course of 11/2 hours, with thorough stirring and with cooling, a solution of 375.6 g of sec-butylphenol in 375 g of glacial acetic acid. There results a dark solution which is stirred at 0° to 4° C. for a further one hour. The reaction mixture is subsequently stirred into 5000 ml of water and ice. The nitrating mixture is obtained as a dark oil which is extracted with 1500 ml of chloroform. The chloroform is distilled off, and steam is passed into the dark oil obtained. As distillate is obtained 235 g of 2-nitro-6-sec-butylphenol in the form of light-yellow oil. with cooling There results a dark solution which is stirred at 0° to 4° C. for a further one hour The nitrating mixture is obtained as a dark oil which is extracted with 1500 ml of chloroform The chloroform is distilled off obtained

Procedure: In the reaction vessel of Example 1 place 190 parts of phenol and 2.4 parts of granular aluminum. Flush with nitrogen and heat to 180°C. to form aluminum phenoxide. Cool and vent. Add 206 parts of 2,6-di-sec-butylphenol and again seal the vessel. Heat to 275°C. and stir at this temperature for 2 hours. Then pressurized with butene-1 to 1000 psig and stir the reaction mixture under these conditions for an additional 4 hours. Cool and discharge the reaction mixture into a dilute aqueous hydrochloric acid solution to hydrolyze the catalyst. Wash with water until neutral and then distill the reaction mixture to recover o-sec-butylphenol. Residual 2,6-di-sec-butylphenol remaining is recycled to a subsequent reaction carried out in the same manner as the foregoing. The net result is that the 2,6-di-sec-butylphenol formed in each reaction is consumed in a subsequent reaction as the donor phenol forming o-sec-butylphenol, thus, avoiding accumulation of 2,6-di-sec-butylphenol and giving higher yields of o-sec-butylphenol. Cool again seal the vessel stir the reaction mixture under these conditions for an additional 4 hours Cool Wash with water until neutral and then distill the reaction mixture to recover o-sec-butylphenol Residual 2,6-di-sec-butylphenol remaining is recycled to a subsequent reaction The net result formed in each reaction is consumed in a subsequent reaction as the donor phenol
