Procedure: 2-n-propylphenol (5.00 g, 36.8 mmol) was dissolved in methylene chloride(40 mL) followed by the addition of sodium nitrate (3.43 g, 40.5 mmol). The addition of sulfuric acid (45 mL/3M) was then made, followed by addition of a catalytic amount of sodium nitrite. The mixture was allowed to stir. After 24 hours, the reaction mixture was diluted with methylene chloride and extracted with water. The organic layer was dried over MgSO4 and filtered. The solvent was evaporated and chromatography of the resulting solid on silica gel (4% MeOH/CH2Cl2) gave the desired product(3.2 mg, 48%). 1H NMR (CD3COCD3): d 7.99 (d, 1H), 7.46 dd, 1H) 6.90 (t, 1H), 2.70 (t, 2H), 1.70 (m, 2H), 1.00 (t, 3H). extracted with water The organic layer was dried over MgSO4 filtered The solvent was evaporated

Procedure: A mixture of 6.8 g (50 mmol) of 2-propylphenol, 8.25 g (55 mmol) of sodium iodide, 175 ml of acetonitrile and 40 ml of water was cooled on ice. t-Butylhypochlorite, 6 g or 6.56 ml (55 mmol), was added slowly at 0°. After stirring for 10 minutes at 0°, 500 ml of ethyl acetate was added and the mixture was washed with 5% aqueous solution of sodium thiosulfate. The organic layer was dried and evaporated and the residue was chromatographed over 150 g of silica gel using methylene chloride/hexane 3:2. The more polar monoiodinated product was crystallized from petroleum ether to give colorless crystals with m.p. 54°-56°. was cooled on ice the mixture was washed with 5% aqueous solution of sodium thiosulfate The organic layer was dried evaporated the residue was chromatographed over 150 g of silica gel The more polar monoiodinated product was crystallized from petroleum ether to give colorless crystals with m.p. 54°-56°

Procedure: A mixture of 90 g (0.66 mole) of 2-propylphenol, 300 g (1.30 mole) of 1,5-dibromopentane, 120 g of anhydrous potassium carbonate, and 9 g of sodium iodide in 1.2 l of methyl ethyl ketone was stirred at reflux for two days. After cooling, the mixture was filtered to remove insolubles and the filtrate was concentrated in vacuo. The residue was distilled under vacuum to give 120 g of the title compound as an analytically pure oil, b.p. 123°-125° at 0.1 mm Hg. at reflux for two days After cooling the mixture was filtered to remove insolubles the filtrate was concentrated in vacuo The residue was distilled under vacuum
