Procedure: A suspension of ethyl 3-oxo-4-(tetrahydro-2H-pyran-4-yl)butanoate (960 mg, 4.48 mmol) and 1N aqueous sodium hydroxide (9.00 mL, 9.00 mmol) was stirred at room temperature for 48 h. The reaction mixture was washed with diethyl ether and then acidified to pH 3 with 0.5N sulfuric acid. The mixture was extracted with ethyl acetate, and the organic layer was dried over sodium sulfate, filtrated and concentrated in vacuo to give 3-oxo-4-(tetrahydro-2H-pyran-4-yl)butanoic acid. MS (ESI): m/z 185 (M−H). The reaction mixture was washed with diethyl ether The mixture was extracted with ethyl acetate the organic layer was dried over sodium sulfate filtrated concentrated in vacuo
