Procedure: An experiment was carried out as described in Example 2 using diethyl nitromalonate instead of diethyl malonate. Thus, 4.1 gm. (20 mmol.) diethylnitromalonate was treated with fluorine to give diethylfluoronitromalonate {δH 1.40 (6H, t, JHH 7.11, CH3), 4.47 (4H, q, JHH 7.12, CH2); δF 127.3 δC 13.7 (s, CH3), 65.2 (s, CH2), 106.3 (d, 1JCF 261.7, CF), 157.9 (d. 2JCF 25.2, CO).} in 76% yield. The conversion was 97%.

Procedure: Pent-1-ynylbenzene (17 mL, 106 mmol) and diethyl 2-nitromalonate (30 mL, 172 mmol) were placed in a stainless steel pressure bomb and heated to 160° C. for 18 hours. Cooled in ice bath then slowly released remaining pressure. The reaction mixture was diluted with ethyl acetate and washed with 1N NaOH. The aqueous layer was back extracted once. The organic layer was dried over MgSO4, filtered, and concentrated. The crude material was treated with 1N NaOH/EtOH at 75° C. for two hours. Diluted with water and washed with EtOAc. The aqueous layer was separated, acidified with concentrated HCl, and extracted with EtOAc. The organic layer was dried with MgSO4, filtered and concentrated to afford 20 g of 5-phenyl-4-propylisoxazole-3-carboxylic acid. Procedure: A solution of (5,5,5-trifluoropent-1-ynyl)benzene (215 mg, 1.09 mmol), diethyl nitromalonate (0.758 mL, 4.34 mmol), and 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate (0.023 mL, 0.108 mmol) in toluene (3 mL) was heated to 170° C. for 150 minutes. The reaction mixture was diluted with ethyl acetate (50 mL), washed with water (10 mL), washed with brine (10 mL), and dried over anhydrous sodium sulfate. Concentration followed by purification by silica gel chromatography with hexanes/ethyl acetate (9/1) provided methyl 5-phenyl-4-(3,3,3-trifluoropropyl)isoxazole-3-carboxylate (72 mg). The compound had an HPLC ret. time=3.61 min.−Column. Procedure: This product was prepared by a modification of the general procedure described in Shimizu, T. et al. Bull.Chem.Soc.Jpn. 1985, 58, 2519. A mixture of 4-chlorobenzonitrile (1.7 g, 12.2 mmol), and diethyl nitromalonate (2.5 g, 12.2 mmol) in dodecane (20 mL) was heated at 150° C. for 15 h. After the reaction was complete, the mixture was allowed to cool to room temperature and was then concentrated in vacuo. The residue was purified by flash chromatography to yield ethyl 5-(4-chlorophenyl)-1,2,4-oxadiazole-3-carboxylate as a light brown solid: mp 88°-89° C.; 1H NMR (300 MHz, CDCl3) δ (TMS) 8.15 (dt, Jt =2.3, Jd =8.7, 2H, arom), 7.54 (dt, Jt =2.3, Jd =8.7, 2H, arom), 4.55 (q, J=7.1, 2H, OCH2), 1.47 (t, J=7.1, 3H, OCH2CH3).
