Procedure: To a solution of methyl N-(tert-butoxycarbonyl)-3-iodo-L-alaninate (215 g, 652 mmol) and 4-chlorophenylacetone (100 g, 593 mmol) in N,N-dimethylformamide (1.5 L) was added cesium carbonate (483 g, 1.48 mol) at room temperature. After 4 h, the mixture was then added to a stirring solution of pH 7 buffer and EtOAc. The aqueous layer was extracted with EtOAc and the combined organics were washed with pH 7 buffer, dried over sodium sulfate, filtered and concentrated. The crude product was purified by silica gel chromatography (10% ethyl acetate/heptane→30% ethyl acetate/heptane) to provide the title compound as a mixture of diastereomers. MS: m/z=392.1 (M+Na). the mixture was then added to a stirring solution of pH 7 buffer The aqueous layer was extracted with EtOAc the combined organics were washed with pH 7 buffer dried over sodium sulfate filtered concentrated The crude product was purified by silica gel chromatography (10% ethyl acetate/heptane→30% ethyl acetate/heptane)

Procedure: To a solution of methyl N-(tert-butoxycarbonyl)-3-iodo-L-alaninate (215 g, 652 mmol) and 4-chlorophenylacetone (100 g, 593 mmol) in dry N,N-dimethylformamide (1.5 L) was added cesium carbonate (483 g, 1483 mmol) at room temperature. After 4 h, the mixture was then added to a stirring solution of pH 7 buffer and EtOAc. The aqeuous layer was extracted with EtOAc and the combined organics were washed with pH 7 buffer, dried over sodium sulfate, filtered and concentrated. The crude product was purified by silica gel chromatography (10% ethyl acetate/heptane→30% ethyl acetate/heptane) to provide the title compound as a mixture of diastereomers (150 g). MS 392.1 (M+Na). the mixture was then added to a stirring solution of pH 7 buffer The aqeuous layer was extracted with EtOAc the combined organics were washed with pH 7 buffer dried over sodium sulfate filtered concentrated The crude product was purified by silica gel chromatography (10% ethyl acetate/heptane→30% ethyl acetate/heptane)

Procedure: 2.56 g of p-chlorophenylacetone was dissolved in a mixed solution of 5 ml of dimethylformamide and 5 ml of benzene, and a dimethylformamide 8 ml/benzene 8 ml solution containing 0.62 g of 60% oily sodium hydride and 3.50 g of (E)-3-(2-naphthyl)-2-propenyl bromide, was added under cooling with ice with stirring, followed by stirring at room temperature for 2 hours. The reaction solution was acidified by an addition of 1N hydrochloric acid and extracted by an addition of water and ethyl ether. Then, the organic layer was washed with a saturated sodium chloride aqueous solution and then dried over anhydrous magnesium sulfate. The drying agent was filtered off, and then, the solvent was distilled off under reduced pressure. The residue was purified by silica gel column chromatography (hexane/ethyl acetate=5/1) to obtain 3.70 g of the above-identified compound. was added under cooling with ice by stirring at room temperature for 2 hours extracted by an addition of water and ethyl ether Then, the organic layer was washed with a saturated sodium chloride aqueous solution dried over anhydrous magnesium sulfate The drying agent was filtered off the solvent was distilled off under reduced pressure The residue was purified by silica gel column chromatography (hexane/ethyl acetate=5/1)

Procedure: To chlorosulfonic acid (25 ml, excess) cooled at −10° C. is added dropwise 4-chlorophenyl acetone (1.0 g, 5.93 mmol). The temperature is kept below 0° C. throughout the addition. The reaction mixture is then left to warm up to room temperature overnight. The reaction mixture is poured carefully onto ice (1500 ml). Once the ice is melted, the aqueous layer is extracted with dichloromethane (3×250 ml). The combined organic layers are dried over MgSO4, filtered and concentrated to afford the titled compound as an off-white solid. The temperature is kept below 0° C. throughout the addition The reaction mixture is then left The reaction mixture is poured carefully onto ice (1500 ml) the aqueous layer is extracted with dichloromethane (3×250 ml) The combined organic layers are dried over MgSO4 filtered concentrated
