Procedure: 83 ml of hexylbenzene were treated with 1.8 g of aluminium chloride while cooling with ice. After brief stirring a solution of 40 g of 2,5-dichloro-2,5-dimethyl-hexane in 300 ml of carbon disulphide was added dropwise and the mixture was stirred at 0° C. for a further 2 hours. The reaction mixture was poured into ice/6N hydrochloric acid, extracted with ethyl acetate, dried over sodium sulphate and evaporated. The crude product was distilled in a high vacuum. There were obtained 25.5 g of 1,1,4,4-tetramethyl-6-hexyl-1,2,3,4-tetrahydro-naphthalene as a colourless oil, boiling point 141-152° C./0.8 mm. while cooling with ice was added dropwise extracted with ethyl acetate dried over sodium sulphate evaporated The crude product was distilled in a high vacuum

Procedure: Phenylglyoxal monohydrate (304 mg, 2 mM) and n-hexylbenzene (0.76 ml, 4 mM) were dissolved in dichloroethane (3 ml), titanium tetrachloride (0.33 ml, 3 mM) was added, and reacted at room temperature for 1 hour. Using the same procedure as in Example 1, 4'-n-hexylbenzoin was obtained as crystal (352.8 mg, 59.4% yield). reacted at room temperature for 1 hour

Procedure: To a mixture of 25.7 grams of aluminum chloride, 51.3 mL of 1,2-dichloroethane, and 10 grams of benzene-1,2,4,5-tetracarboxylic acid dianhydride (pyromellitic dianhydride) was added with cooling, a solution of 14.9 grams of hexylbenzene and 6.40 grams of diisopropylethylamine in 25 mL of 1,2-dichloroethane over a period of 3.5 hours, keeping the temperature between 15° C. and 20° C. The resulting mixture was stirred for an additional 15 minutes after the addition was complete, and it was then heated to 40° C. for one hour. The warm mixture was poured into a beaker with 200 grams of ice and 75 mL of concentrated hydrochloric acid and stirred overnight at room temperature. The aqueous phase was poured off and the resulting oily solid was stirred with 500 mL of water, and the water was poured off. This water wash was repeated, and the resulting residue was dissolved in 250 mL of acetone and concentrated in vacuo. This residue was stirred with 55 mL of ethyl acetate, and the resulting solid was collected by filtration, washed with 100 mL of ethyl acetate, and dried to give 2,5-bis(4-hexylbenzoyl)terephthalic acid. was added with cooling the temperature between 15° C. and 20° C after the addition stirred overnight at room temperature The aqueous phase was poured off This water wash the resulting residue was dissolved in 250 mL of acetone concentrated in vacuo This residue was stirred with 55 mL of ethyl acetate the resulting solid was collected by filtration washed with 100 mL of ethyl acetate dried

Procedure: To a solution of 1-hexylbenzene (5.00 g, 30.8 mmol) in CHCl3 (50 mL) was added chlorosulfonic acid (17 mL, 29.8 g, 256 mmol) and the mixture was stirred at rt for 20 h. The mixture was poured on ice (200 mL) and extracted with EtOAc (3×100 mL). The combined extracts were washed with water, a solution of NaHCO3, and water, dried (Na2SO4), and concentrated in vacuo. The yellow oily residue (ca 81% yield) was used without further purification in the next reaction; 1H NMR (300 MHz, CDCl3) δ 0.88 (t, 3H, J=7 Hz), 1.30-1.35 (m, 6H), 1.55-1.63 (m, 2H), 2.59 (t, 2H, J=8 Hz), 7.38 (d, 2H, J=8 Hz), 7.89 (d, 2H, J=8 Hz). The mixture was poured on ice (200 mL) extracted with EtOAc (3×100 mL) The combined extracts were washed with water a solution of NaHCO3, and water, dried (Na2SO4) concentrated in vacuo
