Procedure: Phenylglyoxal monohydrate (304 mg, 2 mM) and n-butylbenzene (0.62 ml, 4 mM) were dissolved in dichloroethane (4 ml), titanium tetrachloride (0.33 ml, 3 mM) was added, and reacted at room temperature for 1 hour. Using the same procedure as in Example 1, 4'-n-butylbenzoin was obtained as crystal (362.7 mg, 67.2% yield). reacted at room temperature for 1 hour

Procedure: Normal-butylbenzene is prepared by heating equal molar amounts of 1-chlorobutane and benzene in a molten urea-sulfuric acid component containing 42.6 weight percent urea and 75.4 weight percent sulfuric acid having a urea/sulfuric acid molar ratio of 1.2 at a temperature of 140° F. and a pressure of 100 psig. for a period of 10 minutes. The n-butylbenzene product is recovered by cooling the reaction mixture to solidify the urea-sulfuric acid component melt and extracting the resulting mixture with toluene. The n-butylbenzene product is removed from the toluene solvent by distilling the solvent, and the urea-sulfuric acid component is re-melted and recycled to the process. Procedure: 4-n-butylbenzenesulfonic acid is prepared by sulfonating 4n-butylbenzene with concentrated sulfuric acid at 180° C. as in previous reactions. Nitration of this compound with a mixture of sulfuric acid and nitric acid on a steam bath yielded 3-nitro-4-n-butylbenzenesulfonic acid. Hydrogenation of this in 50% ethanol/water over palladium on charcoal afforded 3-amino-4-n-butylbenzenesulfonic acid. Structural verification was obtained by carbon magnetic resonance, proton magnetic resonance and infra-red analysis. at 180° C.

Procedure: To a mixture of 301 mg (purity: 100%; 1.82 mmol) of 4-hydroxy-3,6-dichloropyridazine and 832 mg (5.52 mmol) of 2-cyclopropyl-6-methylphenol were added normal butylbenzene (2.76 g) and 333 mg (5.65 mmol) of 95% potassium hydroxide at room temperature. The resultant mixture was heated to 180° C. while stirring, and stirred at that temperature for 4 hours. Then, the resultant reaction mixture was cooled to room temperature, and a 1 N aqueous hydrochloric acid solution and methanol were added to the reaction mixture to obtain a uniform solution. The obtained solution was quantitatively determined by an HPLC internal standard analysis method, which showed that 308 mg of 6-chloro-3-(2-cyclopropyl-6-methylphenoxy)-4-pyridazinol (yield: 61%) and 2.9 mg of 3-chloro-6-(2-cyclopropyl-6-methylphenoxy)-4-pyridazinol (yield: 0.6%) were obtained. stirred at that temperature for 4 hours Then, the resultant reaction mixture to obtain a uniform solution
