Procedure: At -70° C., 73 ml of a 1.7-molar butyllitium solution in hexane is added dropwise to a solution of 18.6 g of the dimethyl ester of methanephosphonic acid in 280 ml of tetrahydrofuran; the mixture is stirred for 15 minutes and a solution of 10.5 g of 2-methylhept-5-ynoic acid ethyl ester in 48 ml of tetrahydrofuran is gradually added thereto. The mixture is stirred for 4 hours at -70° C., neutralized with acetic acid, and evaporated under vacuum. The distillation of the residue under vacuum at 0.6 torr and 130° C. yields 10.8 g of the title compound as a colorless fluid. The mixture is stirred for 4 hours at -70° C. evaporated under vacuum The distillation of the residue under vacuum at 0.6 torr and 130° C.

Procedure: 0.780 g of aluminum hydroxide, 1.47 g of methylphosphonic acid, and 6.64 g of water were mixed and stirred for 1 hour. Then the mixture was placed in an internal cylinder of Teflon in a stainless steel pressure-resistant vessel, which was placed in turn in a constant-temperature bath, and the mixture in the vessel was heated under autogenous pressure at 160° C. for 48 hours. After cooling to room temperature, suspended needle crystals were scooped out, washed with water, and dried in air, to obtain 0.97 g of aluminum methylphosphonate. The product gave essentially the same powder X-ray diffraction pattern as that in Example 4, and the product also contained a phase that gave essentially the same powder X-ray diffraction pattern as that in Example 1. which was placed in turn in a constant-temperature bath After cooling to room temperature washed with water dried in air

Procedure: A solution of methylphosphonic acid (28.8 parts, 0.3 mol) in water (50 milliliters) is added dropwise to a suspension of melamine (37.8 parts, 0.3 mol) in water (500 milliliters) at refluxing temperatures over 30 mins. A clear solution is formed. Heating is continued for a further 2 hours and the reaction mixture is evaporated to dryness under reduced pressure. The solid product is collected, washed with methanol and dried at 80° C. under vacuum to give 64 parts of methylphosphonic acid melamine salt having melting point >250° C. Calculated for C4H11N6O3P: %C 21.62, %H 4.95, %N 37.84, %P 13.96.
