Procedure: 20.4 G. (0.2 moles) of 2-ethyl-1-butanol is added dropwise under anhydrous conditions to 250 ml. (0.4 moles) of 17.2% phosgene solution in benzene with stirring in an ice bath. The addition is complete in 70 minutes and the solution is allowed to gradually warm to room temperature and stirred for 16 hours. The excess phosgene and hydrogen chloride are removed with a stream of nitrogen and the residual solution evaporated to dryness in vacuo affording 17.9 g. (54%) of a light yellow oil which IR demonstrates having a strong chloroformate band and no hydroxy. The oil is used as is in further reactions. The addition The excess phosgene and hydrogen chloride are removed with a stream of nitrogen the residual solution evaporated to dryness in vacuo affording 17.9 g

Procedure: Coupling of 3-bromophenol (17) (5.0 g, 28.9 mmol) with 2-ethylbutan-1-ol (3.25 g, 31.79 mmol) was conducted following the procedure given for Example 6. The reaction mixture was concentrated under reduced pressure then triturated with diethyl ether. The suspension was filtered and the filtrate was concentrated under reduced pressure. Purification by flash chromatography (100% hexanes) gave 1-bromo-3-(2-ethylbutoxy)benzene a clear liquid. Yield (5.04 g, 62%): 1H NMR (400 MHz, DMSO-d6) δ 7.20 (t, J=8.0 Hz, 1H), 7.11 (t, J=2.2 Hz, 1H), 7.07 (dd, J=8.0, 2.0 Hz, 1H), 6.92 (dd, J=8.4, 2.6 Hz, 1H), 3.84 (d, J=5.6 Hz, 2H), 1.61-1.53 (m, 1H), 1.46-1.30 (m, 4H), 0.86 (t, J=7.4 Hz, 6H). Procedure: Polymer bound PPh3 was suspended in THF for 15 min. Methyl 7-hydroxy-8-methyl-2-(trifluoromethyl)-2H-chromene-3-carboxylate from Step 1 (1.5 g, 5.21 mmole) and 2-ethyl butanol (0.96 mL, 7.81 mmole) were added to the above slurry and stirred for 15 min. Ethyl azodicarboxylate (1.23 mL, 7.81 mmole) was added to above mixture dropwise and the mixture was stirred at room temperature overnight. LCMS indicated product formation and that there was no starting material present. The polymer was filtered off through celite pad and the pad was washed with ether. The filtrate was concentrated and the product mixture was suspended in hexane. The undissolved solid was removed by filtration and the filtrate was evaporated and dried in vacuo to afford yellow solid, (1.76 g, 98%): LCMS m/z395.15 (M+Na). 1H NMR (CDCl3/400 MHz) 7.68 (s, 1H), 7.00 (d, 1H, J=8.4 Hz), 6.48 (d, 1H, J=8.4 Hz), 5.68 (q, 1H, J=7.2 Hz), 3.89 (m, 2H), 3.82 (s, 3H), 2.09 (s, 3H), 1.72 (m, 1H), 1.53 (m, 4H), 0.95 (m, 6H). This ester was of suitable purity to use without further purification. the mixture was stirred at room temperature overnight The polymer was filtered off through celite pad the pad was washed with ether The filtrate was concentrated The undissolved solid was removed by filtration the filtrate was evaporated dried in vacuo to afford yellow solid, (1.76 g, 98%) to use without further purification
