Procedure: A solution of 3-bromobenzyl chloride (20 g, 97 mmol) and triphenylphosphine (25.5 g, 97 mmol) in o-xylene (200 mL) was heated to 140° C. with stirring for 48 hours. The white precipitate was filtered, washed with hexane, and air dried to afford (3-bromo-benzyl)-triphenyl-phosphonium chloride (36.8 g, 95%) as a white crystalline solid. The crude was used in next step without farther purification. MS: m/z 431 (M+H+). The white precipitate was filtered washed with hexane, and air dried

Procedure: To a stirred mixture of pentane-2,4-dione (2.7 g, 26.7 mmol) and K2CO3 (3.4 g, 24.3 mmol) in EtOH (50 mL), 1-bromo-3-(chloromethyl)benzene (5.0 g, 24.3 mmol) was added at RT and the reaction mixture was refluxed overnight. After removal of volatiles under reduced pressure, the residue was taken up in EtOAc (100 mL) and washed with H2O (50 mL). The organic layer was separated, washed with brine, dried over Na2SO4, filtered and concentrated to afford the crude product, which was purified by silica gel column chromatography (EtOAc:Petroleum ether=1:10) to afford 4-(3-bromophenyl)butan-2-one as a colorless oil (3.7 g, 67%). MS (ES+) C10H11BrO requires: 226, 228 found: 227[M+H]+, 229 [M+2+H]+(1:1). was added at RT the reaction mixture was refluxed overnight After removal of volatiles under reduced pressure washed with H2O (50 mL) The organic layer was separated washed with brine dried over Na2SO4 filtered concentrated to afford the crude product, which was purified by silica gel column chromatography (EtOAc:Petroleum ether=1:10)

Procedure: To a suspension of thiomorpholine 1,1-dioxide (0.72 g, 5.4 mmol) and potassium carbonate (0.74 g, 5.4 mmol) in acetone (10 mL) was added bromo-3-chloromethyl-benzene (0.62 mL, 4.9 mmol). The mixture was stirred at room temperature for 18 hours. The mixture was diluted with dichloromethane (50 mL), filtered through a plug of diatomaceous earth and evaporated to a waxy solid. The material was purified via chromatography utilizing an ISCO automated purification apparatus (24 g silica gel column 10%→100% ethyl acetate in hexane). 4-(3-Bromo-benzyl)-thiomorpholine 1,1-dioxide was isolated as a clear viscous oil that solidified to a white solid (1.0 g, 67%). 1H NMR (400 MHz, CDCl3, δ, ppm): 7.49 (s, 1H), 7.41 (ddd, J=6.9, 1.9, 1.9 Hz, 1H), 7.25-7.19 (m, 2H), 3.62 (s, 2H), 3.10-2.96 (m, 8H).
