Procedure: Accordingly, compounds of formula (Ca) are prepared, as set forth above in REACTION SCHEME 2B, by first combining a pentane-3-dioate, e.g. dimethyl 3-oxopentanedioate shown, with a 1,2-bismethyl aromatic having a suitable leaving group on each methyl group, e.g., 1,2-bis(bromomethyl)benzene, in a mixed protic/aprotic solvent medium, e.g., THF-MeOH, and a metal alkoxide, e.g., sodium methoxide. The metal alkoxide can be added as such or made in situ via careful addition (e.g., at low temperature) of the appropriate metal to at least the protic solvent, preferably prior to combination with the remaining reactants. The intermediate benzo[7]annulene product so formed can be optionally isolated and may contain one or two carboxy ester groups depending on the reaction conditions, e.g., methyl 7-oxo-6,7,8,9-tetrahydro-5H-benzo[7]annulene-6,8-dicarboxylate, as shown above. The intermediate, dimethyl 7-oxo-6,7,8,9-tetrahydro-5H-benzo[7]annulene-6,8-dicarboxylate, is subjected to basic hydrolysis (saponification) conditions followed by acidification to give compounds of formula (Ca). Accordingly, compounds of formula (Ca) are prepared as set forth above in REACTION SCHEME 2B made in situ via careful addition (e.g., at low temperature) of the appropriate metal to at least the protic solvent

Procedure: Sodium hydride (0.88 g) was suspended in 3 ml dimethyl formamide. To this stirred solution was added methanesulfonamide (0.95 g, 10 mmol) in 5 ml dimethyl formamide dropwise under nitrogen. After stirring at 60° C. for 0.5 hours, a solution of 2.64 g (10 mmol) α,α'-dibromo-o-xylene in 7 ml DMF was added at a rate appropriate to maintain the temperature at 60°-70° C. The mixture was stirred at room temperature for another hour, then quenched by pouring into water. The resulting precipitate was collected and washed with water, petroleum ether and ether successively. Weight 1.57 g (80%). 1H-NMR δ2.37 (s, 3H, --CH3), 4.709 (s, 4H, 2CH2). 7.25~7.35 (m. 4H, ArH). to maintain the temperature at 60°-70° C The mixture was stirred at room temperature for another hour quenched by pouring into water The resulting precipitate was collected washed with water, petroleum ether and ether successively

Procedure: Dissolve diethyl malonate (7.6 mL, 50 mmol) in anhydrous tetrahydrofuran (500 mL) and place under an argon atmosphere. Cool to 5° C., add sodium hydride (1.2 g, 50 mmol) and stir briefly until homogeneous. Add α,α'-dibromo-o-xylene (13.2 g, 50 mmol) and stir an additional 15 minutes. Add additional sodium hydride (1.2 g, 50 mmol) and stir for 16 hours while warming to room temperature. Filter, evaporate the solvent in vacuo and purify by silica gel chromatography (1:1 methylene chloride/hexane) to give 2,2-dicarboethoxyindan (9.64 g, 74%). stir for 16 hours while warming to room temperature Filter evaporate the solvent in vacuo purify by silica gel chromatography (1:1 methylene chloride/hexane)

Procedure: To a mixture of 2-[4-(6-fluoro-1,2-benzisoxazol-3-yl)-1-piperidinyl]acetamide (2.56 g, 9.2 mmol) in DMF (40 ml) was chipped in sodium hydride (770 mg, 60% in oil, 20.1 mmol) at room temperature under N2. The mixture was heated to 65° C. for 3 hours. α,α'-dibromoxylene (2.43 g, 9.2 mmol) was added and the resulting mixture was heated at 70° C. for 4 hours, then left standing overnight for 16 hours. The DMF mixture was poured into H2O (400 ml) and the organics were extracted into ethyl acetate (250 ml). The ethyl acetate solution was washed with brine and dried over MgSO4. The solvent was removed and the residue was purified by flash chromatography over a silica gel column (SiO2, 45 gm; eluted with 1% CH3OH; 99% DCM). The product thus purified as a white solid weighed 1.73 g. Recrystallization from a small amount of ethanol yielded white crystals: 1.65 g, m.p. 184-185° C. the resulting mixture was heated at 70° C. for 4 hours left the organics were extracted into ethyl acetate (250 ml) The ethyl acetate solution was washed with brine dried over MgSO4 The solvent was removed the residue was purified by flash chromatography over a silica gel column (SiO2, 45 gm; eluted with 1% CH3OH; 99% DCM) The product thus purified as a white solid Recrystallization from a small amount of ethanol yielded white crystals
