Procedure: A solution of N-(10-Undecenyl)phthalimide (4.97 g, 16.6 mmol), prepared as discribed above, 4-methylmorpholine-N-oxide (8.62 mL, 60% by wt in water, 50.0 mmol) and potassium osmate dihydrate (58 mg, 0.16 mmol) in 100 mL acetone/water (1:1 by wt) was stirred for 16 hours. Water (100 mL) and sodium sulfite (10 g) were added and the resulting solution stirred for an additional hour. The resulting reaction mixture was extracted with dichloromethane (3×80 mL) and the organic phase dried using magnesium sulfate and evaporated to obtain 3.93 g (71% yield) of N-(10,11-Dihydroxyundecyl)phthalimide (inventive compound no. 1108). the resulting solution stirred for an additional hour The resulting reaction mixture was extracted with dichloromethane (3×80 mL) the organic phase dried evaporated

Procedure: A mixture of 10-undecene-1-ol (5.00 g, 29.36 mmol, 1 equiv), triphenylphosphine (7.70 g, 29.36 mmol, 1 equiv) and phthalimide (4.32 g, 29.36 mmol, 1 equiv) in dry tetrahydrofuran (THF, 30 mL) was stirred vigorously under argon. Diethyl azodicarboxylate (DEAD, 5.11 g, 29.36 mmol, 1 equiv) was diluted with THF (12 mL) and added dropwise by syringe. After the addition, the reaction was stirred at room temperature for 4 hours. The solvent was evaporated under vacuum and ether (30 mL) was added to precipitate the triphenylphosphine oxide and hydrazine dicarboxylate which were removed by filtration. The precipitate was rinsed with ether (2×30 mL) and the combined filtrates were evaporated to afford a yellow solid. The yellow solid was triturated with warm hexanes (3×50 mL) and filtered. The combined hexanes were evaporated to give 1-phthalimidylundec-10-ene as a yellow wax. added dropwise by syringe After the addition the reaction was stirred at room temperature for 4 hours The solvent was evaporated under vacuum and ether (30 mL) was added to precipitate the triphenylphosphine oxide and hydrazine dicarboxylate which were removed by filtration The precipitate was rinsed with ether (2×30 mL) the combined filtrates were evaporated to afford a yellow solid The yellow solid was triturated with warm hexanes (3×50 mL) filtered The combined hexanes were evaporated

Procedure: A solution of 2-undec-10-enyl-1,3-dioxo-1,3-dihydroisoindole (2 g, 6.68 mmol) of Step 1 and Aliquat® 336 (0.2 g) in a mixture of hexane (20 ml) and acetic acid (6 ml) was added dropwise to a solution of potassium permanganate (2.76 g, 20 mmol) in water (28 ml) while cooling at 0° C. The reaction mixture was stirred at room temperature for 7 hours, then an aqueous solution of sodium bisulfite was added until disappearance of the purple colour. The mixture was then extracted with ethyl acetate and the organic phase was dried over sodium sulfate and concentrated. The residue was purified by silica gel column chromatography eluting with 2:1 hexane:ethyl acetate mixture. The product was obtained as a white solid (1.29 g, 61% yield). The mixture was then extracted with ethyl acetate the organic phase was dried over sodium sulfate concentrated The residue was purified by silica gel column chromatography eluting with 2:1 hexane
