Procedure: To a solution of 4-bromo-2-methansulfonyl-benzaldehyde (1.0 g, 3.88 mmol) in EtOH (11 mL)/THF (2.5 mL) was added NaBH4 (1.29 g, 34.2 mmol) in three portions. The reaction was carefully quenched with water and the product was extracted with EtOAc, dried (Na2SO4), and purified by silica gel chromatography to give 735 mg of (4-bromo-2-methansulfonyl-phenyl)-methanol. The reaction was carefully quenched with water the product was extracted with EtOAc dried (Na2SO4) purified by silica gel chromatography

Procedure: A mixture of triethyl phosphate (400 μL, 428 mg, 2.35 mmol) and phosphorous pentoxide (216 mg, 1.52 mmol) is heated at 50° C. over night and dilutet with tert-butyl methyl ether (10 mL). Cyclohexane-1,3-dione (320 mg, 2.85 mmol), 4-bromo-2-(methylsulfonyl)benz-aldehyde (500 mg, 1.90 mmol) and 1-(3-(trifluoromethyl)phenyl)urea (388 mg, 1.90 mmol) are added, and the mixture is heated at reflux over night and concentrated under reduced pressure. The residue is purified by reversed phase HPLC (Agilent ZORBAX™+SB-C18, gradient of acetonitrile in water, 0.15% formic acid). Yield: 80 mg; ESI mass spectrum [(79Br)-M+H]+=543, [(81Br)-M+H]+=545, Retention time HPLC: 1.06 min (Z017_S04). the mixture is heated at reflux over night concentrated under reduced pressure The residue is purified by reversed phase HPLC (Agilent ZORBAX™+SB-C18, gradient of acetonitrile in water, 0.15% formic acid) 1.06 min (Z017_S04)
