Procedure: 567 mg (3.6 mmol) of L-serine methyl ester hydrochloride are dissolved in 0.5 ml of water, and 610 mg (3.6 mmol) of ethyl benzimidate in 10 ml of dichloromethane are added thereto. After 48 h at reflux, the mixture is concentrated to a volume of 50 ml of dichloromethane and washed with NaHCO3 (3×10 ml), and the aqueous phase is extracted with ethyl acetate (2×10 ml). Column chromatography (15×5 cm, hexane/ethyl acetate 1:1) yields 3.0 g of A2a (91% of theory). After 48 h at reflux the mixture is concentrated to a volume of 50 ml of dichloromethane washed with NaHCO3 (3×10 ml) the aqueous phase is extracted with ethyl acetate (2×10 ml) Column chromatography (15×5 cm, hexane/ethyl acetate 1:1) yields 3.0 g of A2a (91% of theory)

Procedure: A white suspension of glycine (3.81 g, 50 mmol) in water (0.9 g) and methanol (16 ml) was stirred at room temperature, adjusted to pH 9.6 by the addition of sodium hydroxide solution and admixed with ethyl benzimidate (7.69 g, 50 mmol). The mixture was heated for 1 hour at 50° C. and allowed to cool at room temperature. The solid was filtered off, washed with toluene and dried at room temperature/30 mbar. The yield of the title compound was 6.81 g (approximately 95 percent pure by H-NMR), 74 percent based on glycine. Other data concerning the title compound was: The mixture was heated for 1 hour at 50° C. to cool at room temperature The solid was filtered off washed with toluene dried at room temperature/30 mbar
