Procedure: To a stirred solution of (E)-methyl 3-(2,4-dichlorophenyl)acrylate (5052 mg, 21.86 mmol) in THF (109.00 mL) at RT was added 2M NaOH (32.8 mL, 65.6 mmol) and the mixture allowed to stir for 24 hrs. The THF was removed under reduced pressure and on cooling HCl (37%) was added dropwise to the aqueous solution.
