Procedure: Following the procedure of Example 1, 2-chloro-6-methylphenylacetonitrile is condensed with 4-amino-2-methylpyrimidine-5-carboxaldehyde to give 6-(2-chloro-6-methylphenyl)-2-methylpyrido[2,3-d]-pyrimidin-7-amine, mp 267°-271° C., after recrystallization from isopropanol.

Procedure: A solution of 9.4 g of alpha,2-dichloro-6-methyltoluene in 30 ml of 95% ethanol is treated with a solution of 3.8 g of potassium cyanide in 5 ml of water and heated at reflux for 6 hours.
