Procedure: A suspension of 13.9 g of pentyltriphenylphosphonium bromide in 150 ml of tetrahydrofuran is cooled to -20° under argon, 21.2 ml of 1.6M butyllithium solution in hexane are added within a period of 5 minutes and the whole is stirred for a further 30 minutes at 0°-10°. 6 g of 4-nonylbenzaldehyde in 40 ml of tetrahydrofuran are added dropwise over a period of 30 minutes to the mixture, which has been cooled to from -60° to -70°. The reaction mixture is allowed to warm spontaneously to 0°-10°, stirred at this temperature for a further 45 minutes and concentrated by evaporation. The residue is taken up in hexane/ethyl acetate (1:1) and filtered over silica gel. The filtrate is concentrated by evaporation and chromatographed on silica gel with hexane. The title compound (mixture of cis- and trans-isomers) is obtained in the form of a colourless oil, which is used directly in the next stage. is cooled to -20° under argon has been cooled to from -60° to -70° to warm spontaneously to 0°-10° stirred at this temperature for a further 45 minutes concentrated by evaporation filtered over silica gel The filtrate is concentrated by evaporation chromatographed on silica gel with hexane

Procedure: Oxidative Formylation--Allow a two-phase mixture of trifluoroacetic acid (150 mL) and hexamethylene tetramine (14.0 g, 0.100 mol), and 1-phenyl-n-nonane (20.4 g, 0.100 mol) to stand 18 hrs. at 25° C., and then reflux for 22 hrs. Concentrate the homogenous reaction mixture and pour the residue over ice and H2O (total of 600 mL). Add diethyl ether (200 mL) and stir the mixture vigorously for 30 min. Raise the pH of the mixture to pH 8 with solid Na2CO3, and add diethyl ether (200 mL). Shake the layers and separate. Extract the aqueous phase with diethyl ether. Wash the combined organic solutions with H2O and brine, dry and filter. Evaporate the solvent, and distill the residue to give 4-(n-nonyl)benzaldehyde (57% yield, 13.2 g) b.p. 136°-139° C. at 0.55 mm. Procedure: A solution of 2.0 g (7.5 mmol) of 4-nonylbenzoyl chloride in 75 mL of THF at −78° C. was treated with 7.5 mL (7.5 mmol) of 1M lithium tri-(tert-butoxy) aluminum hydride in THF. After 30 min at −78° C., the reaction was quenched with 2N HCl and was allowed to warm to rt. The mixture was poured into Et2O and washed with 2N HCl, sat'd NaHCO3 and sat'd NaCl. The organic layer was dried over MgSO4 and concentrated. The residue was purified on a 40M Biotage column using 100:1 v/v hexane/Et2O as the eluant to afford 708 mg (41%) of the title compound: 1H-NMR (500 MHz) δ 0.87 (t, J=7.0, 3H), 1.26-1.31 (m, 12H), 1.60-1.66 (m, 2H), 2.68 (t, J=7.8, 2H), 7.32 (d, J=8.0, 2H), 7.79 (d, J=8.0, 2H), 9.97 (s, 1H). the reaction was quenched with 2N HCl The mixture was poured into Et2O washed with 2N HCl The organic layer was dried over MgSO4 concentrated The residue was purified on a 40M Biotage column
