Procedure: As described in Example 1, the above compound is prepared from 2-acetoacetoxyethyl methacrylate (42.8 g) and 1,2-hexanediol (26 g) in benzene (200 ml) with p-TsOH catalysis under a water separator. Yield: 77% of theory, boiling point=130°-136° C./0.02 mbar.

Procedure: A solution of benzaldehyde (5.1 mL, 50.0 mmol), 1,2-hexanediol (6.5 g, 55.0 mmol), and camphorsulfonic acid (0.58 g, 2.5 mmol) in 50 mL of toluene was heated to reflux (Dean-Stark) with azeotropic removal of water. When the theoretical amount of water was distilled (4.5 hours), the mixture was cooled to room temperature and diluted with 80 mL of ether. The solution was extracted with 2M aqueous sodium carbonate, water and brine, dried (Na2SO4), filtered, and concentrated to provide 10.54 g (102%) of the title compound. to reflux (Dean-Stark) with azeotropic removal of water When the theoretical amount of water was distilled (4.5 hours) diluted with 80 mL of ether The solution was extracted with 2M aqueous sodium carbonate, water and brine dried (Na2SO4) filtered concentrated

Procedure: Similarly, 1,2-butanediol and 2,3-butanediol were heated with equivalent quantities of hexachloroacetone in the presence of K2CO3 or other such basic catalyst as previously defined to produce comparable yields of 1,2-butylene carbonate and 2,3-butylene carbonate, respectively. Also, 3-chloro-1,2-propanediol was reacted in this way with hexachloroacetone to make 4-(chloromethyl)-1,3-dioxol-2-one (chloromethylethylene carbonate). In the same way, styrene glycol (1-phenyl-1,2-ethanediol) is reacted with hexachloroacetone in the presence of a basic catalyst to produce 1-phenylethylene carbonate (4-phenyl-1,3-dioxol-2-one), 1,2-hexanediol is reacted with hexachloroacetone to produce 1,2-hexylene carbonate (4-butyl-1,3-dioxol-2-one), and 1-cyclohexyl-1,2-ethanediol is reacted with hexachloroacetone to make 4-cyclohexyl-1,3-dioxol-2-one (cyclohexylethylene carbonate).
