Procedure: α-[4-(tert-Butyldimethylsilyloxymethyl)-benzyloxy][4-(tert-butyldimethylsilyloxymethyl)styrene] and α-[(tert-Butyldimethylsilyloxymethyl )-benzyloxy][3-(tert-butyldimethylsilyloxymethyl)styrene]. (Formula II, R1 =tert-butyldimethylsilyloxymethylphenyl, R2 =4-tert-butyldimethylsilyloxymethylbenzyl). Methyl 4-(hydroxymethyl)benzoate was treated with tert-butyldimethylsilyl chloride using the general procedure described in Journal of the American Chemical Society, 1972, 94, 6190. The resulting product was reduced with lithium aluminium hydride to afford 4-(tert-butyldimethylsilyloxymethyl)benzyl alcohol. This alcohol was converted into the required compound uising Method C. 1H NMR (CCl4) δ 0.08 (12H, s), 0.91 (18H, s), 4.22 (1H, d, J 2 Hz), 4.68 (5H, br s), 4.90 (2H, s), 7.1-7.6 (8H, m); MS (CH4) 483 (M+ --CH3, 52%), 133 100%).

Procedure: In dichloromethane (20 ml), methyl 4-hydroxymethylbenzoate (1.00 g) was dissolved, followed by the addition of triethylamine (0.9 ml). Under ice cooling, a solution of methanesulfonyl chloride (0.70 g) in dichloromethane (dichloromethane: 5 ml) was added to the resulting solution. The resulting mixture was stirred at room temperature for 15 hours. After dilution with dichloromethane, the reaction mixture was washed with water and was then dried over anhydrous sodium sulfate. The residue obtained by distilling off the solvent under reduced pressure was dissolved in acetonitrile (12 ml). To the resulting solution, potassium cyanide (0.80 g) and 18-Crown-6 (0.16 g) were added, followed by stirring at room temperature for 40 hours. After concentration under reduced pressure, the concentrate was diluted with dichloromethane, washed with water and then, dried over anhydrous sodium sulfate. The residue obtained by distilling off the solvent under reduced pressure was purified by chromatography on a silica gel column (dichloromethane), whereby colorless crystals (0.91 g, 86%) was obtained. A portion of the resulting crystals was recrystallized from a mixed solvent of hexane and ethyl acetate, whereby colorless crystals were obtained. After dilution with dichloromethane, the reaction mixture was washed with water was then dried over anhydrous sodium sulfate The residue obtained by distilling off the solvent under reduced pressure was dissolved in acetonitrile (12 ml) To the resulting solution, potassium cyanide (0.80 g) and 18-Crown-6 (0.16 g) were added by stirring at room temperature for 40 hours After concentration under reduced pressure the concentrate was diluted with dichloromethane washed with water dried over anhydrous sodium sulfate The residue obtained by distilling off the solvent under reduced pressure was purified by chromatography on a silica gel column (dichloromethane)

Procedure: Concentrated sulfuric acid (277.5 ml, 5.2 mol) was added dropwise over 1/2 hr to a stirred solution of chromium (VI) oxide (299.25 g, 2.99 mol) and water (925 ml) at 0°. The resulting solution was added dropwise over 1 hr to a stirred solution of methyl-4-(hydroxymethyl)benzoate (92.5 g, 0.564 mol) and acetone (4.6 l) at 0°. The reaction mixture was allowed to warm to room temperature and stirred overnight The supernatant was decanted before the black tar-like residue was extracted with acetone. The decanted supernatant and acetone extracts were combined and concentrated under vacuum to leave a dark brown residue which was triturated with cold water (4 liter). The precipitate which formed was collected, washed three times with water (1 liter), and dried to give 94.6 g (94%) of the title compound as white crystals, m.p. 218°-221° C. was decanted before the black tar-like residue was extracted with acetone concentrated under vacuum to leave a dark brown residue which was triturated with cold water (4 liter) The precipitate which formed was collected washed three times with water (1 liter) dried
