Procedure: 3,3-Dimethyl-9,9-dioxo-2,4-dioxa-9λ6-thia-spiro[5.5]undecane-1,5-dione (200 mg; 0.763 mmol) is dispersed in 2M HCl aqueous solution (2 mL) and the vial is placed into microwave oven for 23 minutes at 100° C. After cooling, the reaction mixture is extracted with diethyl ether once. The aqueous layer is saturated with solid sodium chloride and extracted with 50% THF in ethyl acetate three times. The organics are combined and dried over Na2SO4, filtered and concentrated in vacuo to afford the title compound. After cooling the reaction mixture is extracted with diethyl ether once extracted with 50% THF in ethyl acetate three times dried over Na2SO4 filtered concentrated in vacuo
