Procedure: A mixture containing 45 g of ethyl 4-chlorobenzoate in 235 ml of anhydrous THF and 19.50 g of NaH (60% in mineral oil) in 235 ml of anhydrous TBF is placed under nitrogen. 36 ml of acetone and 750 ml of additional anhydrous THF are added dropwise at 0° C., and it is heated under reflux for 3 hours. The mixture is acidified to pH=5 by addition of 2N HCl then it is extracted with ether and washed with water and then with saturated NaHCO3 solution; it is dried over MgSO4 and concentrated. The raw product is dissolved in a minimum of toluene, the insoluble matter is filtered then it is purified by chromatography on silica, eluting with cyclohexane/AcOEt mixture (95/5; v/v). 47.9 g of the expected compound is obtained. it is heated under reflux for 3 hours it is extracted with ether washed with water it is dried over MgSO4 concentrated The raw product is dissolved in a minimum of toluene the insoluble matter is filtered it is purified by chromatography on silica eluting with cyclohexane/AcOEt mixture (95/5; v/v)

Procedure: To a solution of 93.10 g (0.47 mole) 1-(4-chlorophenyl)-1,3-butanedione in 500 ml acetone add 60.0 g (0.39 mole) 2-methylene-3-quinuclidinone. Stir the solution at reflux for about 24 hours. Follow the progress of the reaction by thin-layer chromatography on silica gel (EtOAc:MeOH, 9:1). At the completion of the reaction, chill the solution in an ice/water bath. Acidify dropwise with 35 ml concentrated hydrochloric acid to precipitate the product. Collect the precipitate by filtration to obtain the title compound as a mixture of diastereomers. at reflux for about 24 hours the progress of the reaction by thin-layer chromatography on silica gel (EtOAc:MeOH, 9:1) At the completion of the reaction chill the solution in an ice/water bath to precipitate the product Collect the precipitate by filtration

Procedure: A solution of 10 g (51 mmol) of 1-(4-chlorophenyl)butane-1,3-dione (commercially available) dissolved in dimethyl sulfoxide was slowly added dropwise to 2.237 g (56 mmol) of sodium hydride in 200 ml of dimethyl sulfoxide such that the temperature did not exceed 30° C. The mixture was stirred at 20° C. for another 30 minutes. 8.558 g (56 mmol) of methyl bromoacetate in a little dimethyl sulfoxide were then slowly added dropwise at 0° C. The mixture was stirred at 20° C. for 4 hours. The reaction mixture was poured into ice-water and extracted with dichloromethane. The organic phase was repeatedly washed with water. Drying of the combined organic phases, removal of the solvent under reduced pressure and chromatography of the residue gave 7.750 g of product (56.7% of theory); NMR (CDCl3, 400 MHz): 2.19 (s, 3H); 2.99 (d, 1H); 3.03 (d, 1H); 3.69 (s, 3H); 4.95 (dd, 1H); 7.49 (d, 2H); 7.98 (d, 2H). did not exceed 30° C The mixture was stirred at 20° C. for 4 hours extracted with dichloromethane The organic phase was repeatedly washed with water Drying of the combined organic phases, removal of the solvent under reduced pressure and chromatography of the residue
