Procedure: To a slurry of 16.5 g (0.096 mol) of 4-chloroanthranilic acid and 166 ml of phosphorous oxychloride is added portionwise 15 g (0.096 mol) of methyl 4-ketocyclohexane carboxylate. The reaction mixture is refluxed for 3 h, cooled, and concentrated in vacuo. The residue is dissolved in methylene chloride and poured into an ice-NH4OH mixture. The aqueous phase is separated and extracted with methylene chloride. The combined organic phases are dried over Na2SO4 and concentrated in vacuo. Procedure: To 50 mL of methanol is added sodium (3.32 g, 144.3 mmol). After the metal has dissolved indole (2.89 g, 24.6 mmol) and methyl 4-oxocyclohexanecarboxylate (5.0 g, 32.0 mmol) are added. The mixture is heated to reflux for 3 hours. The methanol is removed under reduced pressure and the residue partitioned between water and methylene chloride. The organic layer is discarded. The aqueous layer is acidified to pH 5 and extracted with three portions of methylene chloride. The combined organics are dried over sodium sulfate and evaporated to give 4-indolyl-3-cyclohexenecarboxylic acid (1.71 g). The material is hydrogenated in methanol (75 mL) under 50 psi of hydrogen int he presence of 5% palladium on carbon (0.5 g). After filtration and removal of solvent, the product is obtained as a mixture of diastereomers. are added The mixture is heated to reflux for 3 hours The methanol is removed under reduced pressure the residue partitioned between water and methylene chloride extracted with three portions of methylene chloride The combined organics are dried over sodium sulfate evaporated

Procedure: One mole of methyl 4-hydroxybenzoate was reacted with two moles of hydrogen in the presence of 5% palladium-carbon catalyst. This reaction was carried out in isoproyl alcohol at a temperature of 170°-180° C. and a hydrogen pressure of 20-40 kg/cm2. After the reaction mixture was filtered to recover the catalyst therefrom, the filtrate was distilled to obtain cyclohexanone-4-carboxylic acid methyl ester as the distillate at 140° C./20 mmHg. After the reaction mixture was filtered to recover the catalyst the filtrate was distilled
