Procedure: Concentrated HCl (9.0 mL, 0.11 mol) was added to a cooled (0°-5° C.) solution of isoamyl nitrite (14.8 g, 0.1 mol) and 2-methyl-2-pentene (8.4 g, 0.1 mol). The temperature was maintained below 5° C. during the addition and the reaction mixture was stirred at 5° C. for an additional 30 min. The product was filtered and washed with a cold (-20° C.) 1:1 mixture of petroleum ether. The solid was further washed with petroleum ether to afford a white solid. Yield: 4.9 g (34%); mp 85°-86° C. 1H NMR CDCl3) δ0.98 (CH2CH3), 1.68 (d, 6H, CH3), 2.05 (m, 2H, CH2CH3), 5.88 (dd, 1H, CHNO). MS: 299 (2M+H)+. Procedure: Under similar reaction conditions as in Example 5, methylenecyclohexane, methylenecyclopentane, 2-methyl-1-pentene, 2,4,4-trimethyl-2-pentene and 2,3-diphenyl-1-propene underwent the isomerization to the thermodynamically more stable isomers shown in Table 1. The isomerization of 2-methyl-1-pentene afforded only 2-methyl-2-pentene and 4-methyl-2-pentenes were not observed.

Procedure: Dry hydrogen chloride gas was passed into a mixture of 2-methyl-2-pentene (20 g, 237 mmol) and iso-amyl nitrite (55.67 g, 475 mmol) cooled to -20° C. The reaction mixture was left to stir at 0° C. overnight and the precipitated material was then filtered off and washed with cold (-20° C.) ethanol (3×5 ml). The product was dried in a stream of air and was used without further purification, (13 g, 36%). Procedure: To a solution of the product from Example 100, Part B (300 mg, 1.3 mmol) and 2-methyl-2-pentene (8 ml) in tert-butanol (32 ml) was added a solution of sodium chlorite (1.36 g, 0.12 mmol) in H2O (12 ml) containing sodium dihydrogen phosphate (1.07 g, 8.9 mmol) and the mixture was stirred vigorously for 20 min at room temperature. Solvents were concentrated in vacuo and the residue was diluted with H2O, extracted with EtOAc (3×), extracts combined, dried (Na2SO4), and concentrated in vacuo to give the title compound (180 mg, 56%).
