Procedure: 1H-Indazol-4-amine (81 mg, 0.61 mmol) and methyl 3-iodobenzoate (160 mg, 0.61 mmol) were dissolved in DMF (1 mL) in a microwave tube. Copper (I) iodide (23 mg, 0.12 mmol), trans-N,N′-dimethyl-1,2-cyclohexanediamine (34 mg, 0.24 mmol) and potassium carbonate (169 mg, 1.22 mmol) were added and the mixture heated by microwave (250 W) at 100° C. for 20 minutes. The mixture was filtered through a cartridge, washing with DCM (5 mL) and the filtrate was evaporated to dryness and purified by mass-directed autopreparation. The appropriate fractions were evaporated, dissolved in DCM (10 mL), washed with aqueous sodium bicarbonate, and evaporated to give the title compound (32.7 mg). Procedure: 52.5 g (0.2 mol) of methyl 3-iodobenzoate were heated to reflux for 18 hours with 81 g (0.2 mol) of Lawesson reagent in 330 ml of xylene. By working-up in an analogous manner to that described in Example 1(B) there were obtained 47 g (84.4%) of O-methyl 3-iodothiobenzoate as a yellow evil-smelling oil which was used without further purification.

Procedure: To a stirred solution of 25.2 g of methyl 3-iodobenzoate and 21.0 g of 4-iodotoluene at 180°-190° under nitrogen was added 30.3 g of copper powder portionwise over 1 hour. When approximately one-third of the copper had been added, the reaction initiated and the temperature increased spontaneously to 240°. The mixture was allowed to cool to 210°, then was held at 210° during the addition of the remaining copper and for an additional hour. The mixture was allowed to cool to room temperature and was filtered employing benzene as solvent; the resulting filtrate was concentrated in vacuum to provide the crude product. Column chromatography on silica gel (elution=50-100% benzene/hexane) followed by distillation furnished 7.60 g of methyl 4'-methylbiphenyl-3-carboxylate [bp: 114°-115° C.
