Procedure: To a solution of 26.4 g. (0.137 mole) of 1-(chloropropoxy)-3-methyl-3-phospholene in 57 ml. of 1,2-dichlorobutane was added 30.4 g. (0.411 mole) of n-butanol. The mixture was heated under reflux for 4 hours and then the solvent was removed by evaporation. The residue was distilled under reduced pressure to obtain 15.4 g. (65.3% yield) of 1-butyl-3-methyl-3-phospholene-1-oxide in the form of a liquid having a boiling point of 106° - 116° C at 0.2 mm. of mercury. The mixture was heated under reflux for 4 hours the solvent was removed by evaporation The residue was distilled under reduced pressure to obtain 15.4 g
