Procedure: To a stirred solution of 0.55 g (2.85 mmol) of (4-chloro-2-methyl-phenyl)-hydrazine, in acetic acid (5 ml), was added 0.34 g (2.91 mmol) of ethyl pyruvate. The mixture was stirred 2 hours at 35° C., poured onto an aqueous solution of sat. NaHCO3 and then extracted with ethyl acetate. The combined organic phases were dried over Na2SO4 and concentrated in vacuo, to afford 0.702 g (97%) of 2-[(4-chloro-2-methyl-phenyl)-hydrazono]-propionic acid ethyl ester as a light orange solid. extracted with ethyl acetate The combined organic phases were dried over Na2SO4 concentrated in vacuo

Procedure: To a suspension of 1-(4-chloro-2-methylphenyl)hydrazine as the hydrochloride salt (96 mg, 0.5 mmol) in Et2O (10 mL) was added a 2 N solution of LiOH (3 mL), and the resulting mixture was stirred for 15 minutes. After the system became homogenous, furan-2-carbonyl chloride was added, and the mixture was stirred at room temperature for 30 minutes. The reaction mixture was then diluted with water (100 mL) and extracted with EtOAc (70 mL). The organic layer was separated, washed with brine, and dried over Na2SO4. The crude material of N′-(4-chloro-2-methylphenyl)furan-2-carbohydrazide obtained after the removal of the solvent was used in the next step without further purification. the mixture was stirred at room temperature for 30 minutes extracted with EtOAc (70 mL) The organic layer was separated washed with brine dried over Na2SO4
