Procedure: A solution of dihydroxynaphthalene (500 g, 3.125 mol) and maleic anhydride (765 g, 7.815 mol, 2.5 eq) in 1 L 1:1 1,2-dichlorobenzene:toluene were heated at 110° C. for 3 days. The reaction mixture was then cooled to 90° C., 1.5 L ethyl acetate added, and then further cooled to room temperature overnight. The mixture was then cooled over ice after another 0.5 L ethyl acetate was added and left stirring for 2 hours. The resultant solid was isolated by filtration, washed with 2×200 mL cold ethyl acetate and dried in oven at 40° C. to provide 130 g of the anhydride as a beige solid (16% yield). 1H NMR (acetone-d6) 7.33 (d, J=8.2 Hz, 1H), 6.97 (d, J=2.3 Hz, 1H), 6.85 (dd, J=8.1, 2.4 Hz, 4.05 (d, J=3.9 Hz, 1H), 3.98 (dd, J=6.0, 2.9 Hz, 1H), 3.88 (dd, J=10.2, 3.9 Hz, 1H), 3.70 (dd, J=10.2, 2.7 Hz, 1H), 2.39 (br s, 2H). HRMS for MH+259.0600 (theoretical 259.0606). further cooled to room temperature overnight was added left The resultant solid was isolated by filtration washed with 2×200 mL cold ethyl acetate dried in oven at 40° C.

Procedure: Epichlorohydrin (2.32 g) was added dropwise to a stirred solution of 1,2-dihydroxynaphthalene (4.0 g) and potassium hydroxide (4.0 g) in water (32 ml) and the resulting mixture stirred at 60°-80° C. for 2.5 hours then poured into water (100 ml). The product was extracted into ether (6×100 ml), a small volume of methanol being added to aid solubility. The combined extracts were washed with aqueous sodium hydroxide solution (1M), then water, and dried over magnesium sulphate. The solvent was removed in vacuo to give crude 1-(naphtho[1,2-b]dioxan-2-yl)methanol (4.0 g) as a dark oil which was used without further purification. Procedure: To the solution of 1,2-dihydroxynaphthalene (5 g, 31.2 mmol) in DMF (140 mL) was added NaH (3.0 g, 75.0 mmol). After stirred at room temperature for 1 h, dimethylsulfate (7.09 mL, 75.0 mmol) was added. After stirring at room temperature for 22 h, water and Et2O was added, the organic layer was washed with brine, water, dried (MgSO4), filtered and concentrated. Column chromatography yielded the title compound as a colorless oil (3.83 g, 65%). 1H NMR (CDCl3) δ 8.12 (d, 1H), 7.79 (d, 1H), 7.59 (d, 1H), 7.47 (m, 1H), 7.35 (m, 1H), 7.29 (d, 1H), 3.99 (s, 3H), 3.99 (s, 3H). Procedure: 1,2-Dihydroxynaphthalene (70 mg) was dissolved in acetone (1 ml), the solution was added with benzyl bromide (74.7 mg) and potassium carbonate (72.5 mg), and the mixture was stirred at 70° C. for 1 hour. The reaction mixture was added with distilled water and ethyl acetate, the layers were separated, and the organic layer was dried over anhydrous magnesium sulfate, and filtered. The filtrate was concentrated under reduced pressure, and the resulting residue was purified by silica gel column chromatography (hexane:acetone:triethylamine=50:10:0.2) to obtain the title compound (20.7 mg). the layers were separated the organic layer was dried over anhydrous magnesium sulfate filtered The filtrate was concentrated under reduced pressure the resulting residue was purified by silica gel column chromatography (hexane:acetone:triethylamine=50:10:0.2)
