Procedure: N-(2-ethylhexyl) cyanoacetamide (60.4 g., 0.30 mole), 4-methoxy-3-butene-2-one (60.0 g., 0.60 mole), methylcello-solve (250 ml.) and 1,4-diazobicyclo [2.2.2.] octane (6.0 g.) are heated at reflux for 4 hours. Additional 4-methoxy-3-butene-2-one (30 g.) is added and reflux is continued for another 2 hours. The solvent is removed in vacuo to give an oil. The oil is dissolved in methylene chloride and extracted first with 2N--HCl (150 ml.) and then with water (2 × 250 ml.). The organic layer is dried over sodium sulfate, filtered and evaporated to dryness to give a 90% yield of crude product which is characterized by nmr and ir analysis. at reflux for 4 hours reflux The solvent is removed in vacuo to give an oil extracted first with 2N The organic layer is dried over sodium sulfate filtered evaporated to dryness

Procedure: LiHMDS (1M in THF, 100 mL, 2 eq) is added dropwise to a cold (−78° C.) solution of 4-methoxy-3-buten-2-one (10 mL, 100 mmol, 2 eq) in THF (400 mL). After a 30 min stirring at −78° C., a solution of pivaloyl chloride (6.12 mL, 50 mmol) in THF (100 mL) is added. The resulting mixture is allowed to warm to rt over 2 h and quenched by addition of a saturated solution of NH4Cl. THF is removed under vacuum. The concentrated mixture is extracted with Et2O. The organic phase is washed with brine, dried (Na2SO4), filtered and concentrated. The residue is purified by silica gel column chromatography (Hex/EtOAc, 1:0→85:15) to afford 6.83 g of the title compound as a yellow oil: ESI-MS: 185.1 [M+H]+; TLC: Rf=0.87 (Hex/EtOAc, 1:1). to warm to rt over 2 h quenched by addition of a saturated solution of NH4Cl THF is removed under vacuum The concentrated mixture is extracted with Et2O The organic phase is washed with brine dried (Na2SO4) filtered concentrated The residue is purified by silica gel column chromatography (Hex/EtOAc, 1:0→85:15)

Procedure: Ethyl 3-oxo-3-(phenylamino)propionate (56.8 g, 0.27 mol) and 4-methoxy-3-buten-2-one (30.2 g, 0.30 mol) were dissolved in methanol (300 mL), and 20% sodium ethoxide. (112 g, 0.33 mol) was added dropwise thereto at room temperature. After the dropwise addition, the mixture was refluxed for 8 hours under heating. The reaction mixture was cooled and then concentrated under reduced pressure, and thus obtained residue was dissolved in a mixed solution of 1,4-dioxane (200 mL) and water (200 mL). To the resultant solution, lithium hydroxide monohydrate (23.0 g, 0.55 mol) was added, and the mixture was stirred overnight at room temperature. The reaction mixture was poured into water, and washed with ethyl acetate. The aqueous layer was acidified by adding citric acid, and then extracted with chloroform. The organic layer was washed with water, dried, and concentrated, and thus obtained crystal was washed with ethyl acetate, to obtain 43.4 g of a desired product (yield: 69%). Procedure: To a solution of ethyl 3-oxo-3-{[3-(trifluoromethyl)phenyl]amino}propanoate (19.2 g, 70 mmol) and sodium methoxide (7.6 g, 140 mmol) in EtOH (250 ml) was added 4-methoxybut-3-en-2-one (90%) (7.72 g, 77 mmol). After the addition, the reaction mixture was refluxed for 2 h and then cooled. Water (50 ml) and 2M NaOH were added and the mixture was stirred at room temperature overnight. The organic solvents were removed and the reaction mixture was extracted (washed) with EtOAc. The water phases were acidified with hydrochloric acid to pH 3-4, an orange coloured precipitate appeared and was filtered off, washed with water and dried. Recrystallisation twice from heptane/EtOAc (4:1) afforded the title compound (12 g, 58%) as a white powder. After the addition the reaction mixture was refluxed for 2 h cooled The organic solvents were removed the reaction mixture was extracted (washed) with EtOAc was filtered off washed with water dried Recrystallisation twice from heptane/EtOAc (4:1)
