Procedure: To a solution of 3-(4-methoxyphenyl)propionic acid (8.0 g, 44.4 mmol), propylamine hydrochloride (4.24 g, 44.4 mmol), 4-dimethylaminopyridine (0.65 g, 5.33 mmol) and triethylamine (6.9 mL, 48.96 mmol) in methylene chloride (70 mL) was added 1-[(3-dimethylamino)propyl]-3-ethylcarbodiimide hydrochloride (10.21 g, 53.28 mmol). The reaction mixture was stirred overnight at ambient temperature followed by dilution with methylene chloride. The mixture was washed with 1N hydrochloric acid, 2N sodium hydroxide, water, brine and dried. Evaporation of the solvent yielded the pure product (10.36 g; 95.4%): 1HNMR (400 MHz, CDCl3) δ 7.76 (brs, 1H), 7.10 (d, 2H, J=8.8 Hz), 6.79 (d, 2H, J=8.0 Hz), 3.68 (s, 3H), 2.95 (q, 2H, J=5.6 Hz). 2.71 (t, 2H, J=7.6 Hz), 2.28 (t, 2H, J=7.2 Hz), 1.34 (m, 2H), 0.77 (t, 3H, J=7.2 Hz); ESMS m/z (relative intensity) 222.2 (M+H+, 100). The mixture was washed with 1N hydrochloric acid, 2N sodium hydroxide, water, brine dried Evaporation of the solvent yielded the pure product (10.36 g; 95.4%)

Procedure: A suspension of 0.29 g (2.6 mmol) of n-propylamine hydrochloride in 7 ml of anhydrous N,N-dimethylformamide is cooled to 0° C. and then 0.33 g (3.54 mmol) of N,N-dimethylaminopyridine are added to the mixture. After the addition of 0.41 g (2.36 mmol) of the acid obtained in Step F of Example 40, 0.5 g (2.6 mmol) of EDC is added to the mixture. The solution is stirred for 12 hours under argon at room temperature and then the solvent is evaporated off in vacuo. The residue is taken up in a water/ethyl acetate (1/1) mixture and then the aqueous phase is extracted with ethyl acetate. The organic phase is dried over magnesium sulphate and then concentrated under reduced pressure. Procedure: To a solution of (4S,5R)-5-[3,5-bis(trifluoromethyl)phenyl]-3-[2-(bromomethyl)-5-(trifluoromethyl)benzyl]-4-methyl-1,3-oxazolidin-2-one (27 mg, 0.0479 mmol) in MeCN (0.5 mL) was added n—PrNH2.HCl (5.5 mg, 0.0575 mmol) and i—Pr2NEt (20.8 μL, 0.120 mmol). The solution was heated at 80° C. for 16 hours. The reaction was then cooled to room temperature and purified by reverse-phase chromatography (C-18, 10 to 95% MeCN/water with 0.1% TFA). The fractions containing the desired product were lyophilized to afford (4S,5R)-5-[3,5-bis(trifluoromethyl)phenyl]-4-methyl-3-[2-[(propylamino)methyl]-5-(trifluoromethyl)benzyl]-1,3-oxazolidin-2-one (TFA salt). Procedure: Following the procedure of Example 1, step 3, 1.04 g (7.19 mmol) of 1-methyl-3,4-dihydronaphthalene in 7 ml of acetic acid was reacted with 2.33 ml of 37% formaldehyde solution and 1.58 g of propylamine hydrochloride. Work up gave 1.98 g of crude 1,2,3,4,5,6-hexahydro-3-propyl-benz[f]isoquinoline. Following the procedure of Example 2, this was reacted with 0.435 g of lithium wire in 250 ml of liquid ammonia, 40 ml of anhydrous THF and 1 ml of aniline. Chromatography on flash silica, eluting with 5-10% methanol/dichloromethane, then on alumina, eluting with 2-5% ethyl acetate/petroleum ether, gave 0.497 g (30%) of the title product as a colourless oil. The hydrochloride salt was made using ethereal hydrogen chloride. Upon evaporation of the solvent, the title product hydrochloride was obtained as a white solid, m.p. 257°-259° C. (dec). Procedure: A mixture of triflate (b) (25 g, 81.2 mmol) and propylamine hydrochloride (47 g, 487 mmol) in pyridine (300 ml) was heated to reflux overnight. The mixture was evaporated to dryness, dissolved in 0.5M aqueous hydrochloric acid (400 ml) and extracted three times with dichloromethane. Procedure: To a stirred solution of (2S,3R,4R,5S,6R)-6-(acetoxymethyl)-3-isothiocyanato-tetrahydro-2H-pyran-2,4,5-triyl triacetate (530 mg, 1.36 mmol) in CH3CN (7 mL) was added neat propylamine hydrochloride (260 mg, 2.72 mmol) followed by triethylamine (378 p, 2.72 mmol) and the resulting mixture was stirred for 1 h.
