Procedure: A solution of (2-methyl-furan-3-yl)-methanol (1)(5.0 g) in diethyl ether (75 mL) was cooled to 0° C. with stirring and treated with triphenylphosphine (12.85 g) and biphenyl-4-ol (7.59 g). The resulting solution was then treated drop-wise with diisopropylazodicarboxylate (9.75 mL). After stirring for 10 minutes at 0° C. the reaction mixture was allowed to warm to room temperature and then stirred for a further 3 hours. The reaction mixture was then filtered and concentrated in vacuo. The residue was purified by flash chromatography, eluting with diethyl ether/petroleum ether (1:19 by volume), to give compound 44 as a white solid (7.0 g). LC/MS System A: Rt=4.38 mins. After stirring for 10 minutes at 0° C. the reaction mixture stirred for a further 3 hours The reaction mixture was then filtered concentrated in vacuo The residue was purified by flash chromatography eluting with diethyl ether/petroleum ether (1:19 by volume)
