Procedure: 2-(4-Acetylpiperazin-1-yl)ethanol (500 mg, 2.90 mmol), (prepared as described for the starting material in this example hereinbefore), was dissolved in methylene chloride (10 ml) and triethylamine (445 μl, 3.19 mmol) and 4-toluenesulphonyl chloride (609 mg, 3.19 mmol) were added and the mixture was stirred at ambient temperature overnight. The mixture was washed with brine, dried (MgSO4) and concentrated under reduced pressure. The residue was purified by column chromatography eluting with methylene chloride/methanol (98/2) to give 1-acetyl-4-(2-chloroethyl)piperazine (300 mg, 54%) as an oil. The mixture was washed with brine dried (MgSO4) concentrated under reduced pressure The residue was purified by column chromatography eluting with methylene chloride/methanol (98/2)

Procedure: A mixture of 4-[(4-fluoro-2-methyl-1H-indol-5-yl)oxy]-7-hydroxy-6-methoxyquinazoline (250 mg, 0.74 mmol), 1-acetyl-4-(2-chloroethyl)piperazine (144 mg, 0.81 mmol) and potassium carbonate (112 mg, 0.81 mmol) in N-methylpyrrolidinone (6 ml) was heated at 90° C. for 2 hours. The mixture was cooled and water added. After 30 minutes the solid was filtered off and dried under vacuum. The residue was purified by column chromatography eluting with methylene chloride/methanol (saturated with ammonia) (96/4) to give 7-[2-(4-acetylpiperazin-1-yl)ethoxy]-4-[(4-fluoro-2-methyl-1H-indol-5-yl)oxy]-6-methoxyquinazoline (310 mg, 58%) as a white solid. The mixture was cooled After 30 minutes the solid was filtered off dried under vacuum The residue was purified by column chromatography eluting with methylene chloride/methanol (saturated with ammonia) (96/4)
