Procedure: A mixture of 4-methanesulfonamidobenzoylacetonitrile (10 g, 42 mmol), 2-methylindole-3-carboxaldehyde (7.3 g, 46 mmol) and ammonium acetate (1 g, 12.6 mmol) in 80 mL acetic acid was heated to reflux and held 3 h. The reaction was then cooled to 25° C., and the precipitated dye collected by filtration and washed with acetic acid. The crude dye was slurried in hot acetic acid for 30 min then collected by filtration and dried. Isolated 13 g (82%) of Dye 5. All analytical data were consistent with the structure. was heated to reflux the precipitated dye collected by filtration washed with acetic acid The crude dye was slurried in hot acetic acid for 30 min then collected by filtration dried Isolated 13 g (82%) of Dye 5

Procedure: 2-methylindole-3-carboxaldehyde (10 g, 0.06 mol) was mixed with hexane (40 ml), to which aniline (9.6 ml, 0.11 mol) was added and stirred at 70° C. for 3.5 hours under reflux. Then, toluene (20 ml) was added and dissolved. The mixture was then submitted to silica gel column chromatography. The column was eluted by a developing solvent of hexane/ethyl acetate=3/1 and a fraction containing the desired product was concentrated by distilling off the solvent, to obtain 10.5 g (yield: 75%) of 2-methylindole-3-carboxaldehyde imine. 1H-NMR spectra (chemical shift, ppm: in CDCl3): 2.63 (3H, s), 7.15-7.42 (8H, m), 8.19 (1H, s), 8.45-8.48 (1H, m), 8.69 (1H, s). was added under reflux dissolved The column was eluted by a developing solvent of hexane/ethyl acetate=3/1 a fraction containing the desired product was concentrated by distilling off the solvent

Procedure: To a dried 500 mL round bottom flask under argon, 2-methylindole-3-carboxaldehyde (400 mg, 2.51 mmol) was dissolved in anhydrous MeOH (10 mL). 4-Acetyl-pyridine (305 μL, 2.76 mmol, 1.1 equiv.) and piperidine (82 μL, 0.83 mmol) were added and the reaction was stirred under reflux. A red-orange precipitate gradually formed, and after twelve hours this solid was isolated by filtration, rinsed with chilled methanol and dried under vacuum, producing 458 mg (69%) of yellow solid.
