Procedure: The synthesis of this compound is carried out as described in Example 8 except that, in Step A, the ethyl 7-bromo-2-methylheptanoate is replaced by an equimolar amount of ethyl 4-bromobutoxyacetate (Example M). The product of Step A is thus ethyl 4-{N-[4-(2-tetrahydropyranyloxy)nonyl]methanesulfonamido}butoxyacetate. The subsequent step yields 4-[N-(4-hydroxynonyl)methanesulfonamido]butoxyacetic acid (B). Procedure: To a mixture of NaH (60% in oil, 167 mg, 4.18 mmol) and DMF (10 mL) was added a solution of methanesulfonamide (398 mg, 4.18 mmol) in DMF (5 mL). The mixture was heated at 100° C. for 1.5 h and was cooled to room temperature. A solution of (4-bromo-butoxy)-acetic acid ethyl ester (1.000 g, 4.182 mmol) in DMF (10 mL) was added and the reaction was heated at 100° C. for 21 h. Water was added to the cooled reaction mixture and the aqueous solution was acidified to pH=2 with concentrated HCl. The aqueous solution was extracted with EtOAc (4×) and the organic solution was dried (MgSO4), filtered, and concentrated. The product was purified by flash chromatography (60% EtOAc/hexanes) to afford the title compound (181 mg). 1H NMR (400 MHz, CDCl3) δ 4.90 (m, 1H), 4.20 (q, 2H), 4.04 (s, 2H), 3.54 (m, 2H), 3.16 (m, 2H), 2.93 (s, 2H), 1.69 (m, 4H), 1.26 (t, 3H); MS 254.1 (M+1). was cooled to room temperature the reaction was heated at 100° C. for 21 h The aqueous solution was extracted with EtOAc (4×) the organic solution was dried (MgSO4) filtered concentrated The product was purified by flash chromatography (60% EtOAc/hexanes)

Procedure: A solution of ethyl glycolate (4.6 g, 44 mmol) in DMF (50 mL) was cooled to 0° C. and sodium bis(trimethylsilyl)amide (1.0 M in THF, 53 mL, 53 mmol) was slowly added. The reaction was stirred for 15 minutes and 1,4-dibromobutane (5.6 mL, 48.4 mmol) was added. The reaction was warmed to room temperature and was stirred for 24 h. Et2O was added, and the organic solution was washed consecutively with HCl (1N, 3×), water (3×), and brine (1×). The organic solution was dried (Na2SO4), filtered, and concentrated. Attempted vacuum distillation removed a majority of the impurities and provided a mixture of product and 1,4-dibromobutane (3.539 g). Flash chromatography (9:1 hexanes:EtOAc) of this material provided (4-bromo-butoxy)-acetic acid ethyl ester (1.862 g). 1H NMR (400 MHz, CDCl3) δ 4.19 (q, 2H), 4.04 (s, 2H), 3.54 (t, 2H), 3.45 (t, 2H), 1.97 (m, 2H), 1.75 (m, 2H), 1.26 (t, 3H); MS 239.1 (M+). was stirred for 24 h the organic solution was washed consecutively with HCl (1N, 3×), water (3×), and brine (1×) The organic solution was dried (Na2SO4) filtered concentrated vacuum distillation removed a majority of the impurities provided
