Procedure: A mixture of 2,6-dimethylcyclohexyl alcohol (11.4 g), 4-hydroxyphenylacetic acid (9.12 g), p-toluenesulfonic acid (1 g) and benzene (300 mL) was refluxed with continuous water separation for 20 hours. The mixture was filtered and the filtrate was washed with a 10% Na2CO3 solution, then with water. Drying over MgSO4 and evaporation in vacuo afforded 8.02 g of 2,6-dimethylcyclohexyl 4-hydroxyphenylacetate. That product has the structural formula: ##STR26## The mixture was filtered the filtrate was washed with a 10% Na2CO3 solution Drying over MgSO4 and evaporation in vacuo

Procedure: Example 3 was repeated, replacing (-)-menthol by 2,6-dimethylcyclohexanol (6.4 g; 50 mmol), using 5.1 cm3 (60 mmol) of 40% of H2O2, adding 4 g of anhydrous MgSO4 and reducing the reaction time to 30 minutes. 5.61 g (44.5 mmol) of 2,6-dimethyl-cyclohexanone were obtained (GLC purity>99%), which corresponds to a 89% yield. to 30 minutes

Procedure: 500 ml of catalyst were introduced into a fluidized-bed reactor having a capacity of 0.7 liter. The catalyst contained 0.25% by weight of platinum on a magnesium aluminum spinel carrier and had a particle size of from 0.2 to 0.6 mm and a BET specific surface area of 125 m2 /g. The temperature of the reactor was brought to 275° C., and the mixture which was preheated to this temperature and consisted of 200 liters/hour of nitrogen and 20 liters/hour of hydrogen was passed in. 60 g/hour of gaseous 2,6-dimethylcyclohexanol were passed continuously through the fluidized catalyst bed produced in this manner. The reaction product was obtained by cooling the exit gases, and was distilled. 100 g of 2,6-dimethylcyclohexanol were converted to 90.5 g (yield: 95% of theory) of 2,6-dimethylphenol. was brought to 275° C. produced in this manner The reaction product was obtained by cooling the exit gases was distilled

Procedure: Using a procedure similar to that described in Example 2, 100 g/hour of a mixture consisting of 50% by weight of 2,6-dimethylcyclohexanol and 50% by weight of 2,6-dimethylcyclohexanone were converted, at 250° C. and under otherwise identical conditions, over the catalyst described in the stated example. This procedure gave 2,6-dimethylphenol in a yield of 97% of theory. were converted, at 250° C. and under otherwise identical conditions, over the catalyst

Procedure: 1,000 parts by volume of catalyst are introduced into a fluidised bed reactor having a capacity of 1.2 liters, corresponding to 1,200 parts by volume. The catalyst consists of 0.5% by weight of palladium and 0.2% by weight of zinc on Al2O3 and has a particle size of 0.2 to 0.6 mm. The temperature in the reactor is set to 220° C. and, per hour, a correspondingly preheated mixture of 200,000 parts by volume of ammonia and 200,000 parts by volume of hydrogen is introduced. 50 parts of a mixture consisting of 80% by weight of 2,6-dimethylcyclohexanol and 20% by weight of 2,6-dimethylcyclohexanone is passed continuously, per hour, through the fluidised catalyst bed thus produced. The reaction product is isolated by cooling the exit gases, and is distilled. 100 parts of 2,6-dimethylcyclohexanol/2,6-dimethylcyclohexanone mixture employed give 92 parts of 2,6-dimethylaniline. Yield: 96.5%. 1,000 parts by volume of catalyst are introduced into a fluidised bed reactor The temperature in the reactor is set to 220° C. and, per hour is introduced is passed continuously, per hour, through the fluidised catalyst bed thus produced The reaction product is isolated by cooling the exit gases is distilled
