Procedure: A reactor is charged with 2-(methylamino)ethanol (134 g, 1.8 moles), 4-fluorobenzaldehyde (74.4 g, 0.6 mole), potassium carbonate (82.8 g, 0.6 mole) and dimethylsulfoxide (750 ml), and the mixture is heated at 95° C. for 72 hours. The product mixture is cooled and poured into three liters of ice water. The yellow solid that precipitates is filtered, washed with water, and dried in a vacuum oven, mp 72° C. The 4-[N-(2-hydroxyethyl)-N-methylamino]benzaldehyde product is recrystallized from water as needle-like crystals. The product mixture is cooled The yellow solid that precipitates is filtered washed with water dried in a vacuum oven, mp 72° C The 4-[N-(2-hydroxyethyl)-N-methylamino]benzaldehyde product is recrystallized from water as needle-like crystals

Procedure: A solution of (2,6-dichloro-3-nitro-phenyl)-acetic acid (0.90 g, 3.35 mmol) in thionyl chloride (15 mL) is refluxed for one hour. The solvent is removed by concentration and dry toluene is added to thoroughly remove thionyl chloride. To the solution of acid chloride in dry dichloromethane (30 mL) is added (drop-wise) a solution of 2-aminobenzaldehyde (0.365 g, 3.02 mmol) in dichloromethane (5.0 mL). The mixture is stirred at room temperature for 2 hours. The reaction mixture is diluted with EtOAc and washed with saturated K2CO3 and brine. The organic layer is dried, filtered and concentrated to give crude product (0.94 g, 88.6%). The solvent is removed by concentration and dry toluene is added to thoroughly remove thionyl chloride washed with saturated K2CO3 and brine The organic layer is dried filtered concentrated

Procedure: 2-Aminobenzaldehyde (84.1 mg, 0.69 mmol) and Meldrum's acid (100 mg, 0.69 mmol) were combined in H2O (1 mL). The solution was stirred at 75° C. for 2 h. After cooling to room temperature, the precipitate was filtered and dried at suction to give 86.2 mg of 1,2-dihydro-quinoline-3-carboxylic acid with a yield of 66%. After cooling to room temperature the precipitate was filtered dried at suction
