Procedure: A solution of zinc acetate (0.7 g, 3 mmol) in toluene (15 mL) and 2-methyl-propanethiol (0.72 g, 8 mmol) was refluxed for 45 min in an apparatus equipped with a Dean-Stark trap to azeotrope water. (3R,4R)-4-(Methylsulfonyl)-3-(triphenylmethylamino)azetidin-2-one (1.5 g, 36 mmol) was added and the mixture was heated to 90° C. for 2 h. The mixture was concentrated and the residue was triturated with ethyl acetate and the insoluble material was removed by filtration. The filtrate was concentrated and the residue was chromatographed on silica gel eluted with 20% ethyl acetate:hexane. The fractions containing the product were combined, concentrated to give the title compound. Procedure: To 11 g (50 mmol) of 2-,2′-dipyridyl disulfide and 10.5 mL (75 mmol) of triethyl amine in 100 mL of tetrahydrofuran at 0° C. as added 3.5 mL (50 mmol) of mercaptoacetic acid in 5 mL of tetrahydrofuran. The ice bath was removed and after one hour 5.5 mL (50 mmol) iso-butyl thiol was added. The reaction was allowed to stir overnight at ambient temperature before diluting with ether and washing three times with 1N aqueous HCl. The product was then extracted into 10% aqueous NaOH. The aqueous phase was washed twice with ether and then acidified with HCl to pH ˜3.5. The product was extracted with ether, dried with Na2SO4, filtered and evaporated under reduced pressure to give a crude product. This material was distilled by Kugelrohr distillation to give 3.0 g (17 mmol, 33%) of partially purified product. This material was used in the next step without further purification. was added washing three times with 1N aqueous HCl The product was then extracted into 10% aqueous NaOH The aqueous phase was washed twice with ether The product was extracted with ether dried with Na2SO4 filtered evaporated under reduced pressure

Procedure: 5-Bromo-6-chloropicolinic acid (2 g, 8.46 mmol; CAN 959958-25-9), 2-methylpropane-1-thiol (915 mg, 1.1 mL, 10.2 mmol) and cesium carbonate (6.89 g, 21.1 mmol) were suspended in DMSO (100 mL). The reaction mixture was heated to 150° C. and stirred for 1 d and was poured onto icewater/1N HCl (100 mL). The aqueous layer was extracted with EtOAc (2×250 mL). The combined extracts were washed with icewater/brine (100 mL), dried over Na2SO4 and concentrated in vacuo to give the title compound (2.49 g, 51%) as an orange solid which was used in the next step without further purification.
