Procedure: N-Butyllithium in hexane (1.5M; 35.6 ml) was added dropwise at room temperature under nitrogen to a solution of 2-methylthiophene (5.0 g) in dry THF (50 ml). After stirring for 2.25 h, oxetane (4.42 g) in dry THF (15 ml) was added dropwise and stirring continued for 22.5 h. Saturated ammonium chloride solution (200 ml) was added and the mixture extracted with diethyl ether (3×200 ml), dried and evaporated in vacuo to give an oil. Purification by FCC on silica gel with cyclohexane-diethyl ether (1:1) as eluent gave the title compound as a pale orange oil (1.4 g). T.l.c. (cyclohexane-diethyl ether 1:1) Rf 0.31. stirring continued for 22.5 h the mixture extracted with diethyl ether (3×200 ml) dried evaporated in vacuo to give an oil Purification by FCC on silica gel with cyclohexane-diethyl ether (1:1) as eluent

Procedure: A mixture of 22.7 grams (0.1 mole) of 3-(4-propylheptyl)morpholine, 6.4 grams (0.11 moles) trimethyleneoxide and 150 ml. 96% ethanol was kept at 150°-200° C. for 15 hours in an autoclave. Distillation of the reaction mixture gave 24.6 g (86%) of 3-(4-propyl-heptyl)-4-(3-hydroxypropyl)morpholine), boiling point 122°-124° C./0.01 mm Hg. Distillation of the reaction mixture

Procedure: A mixture of 20 g. of oxetane (0.34 mole), 32.8 g. of N,N,N-trimethyl-[3-(methylamino)]-1-propanaminium bromide (0.156 mole) and 22 ml. water is heated in a sealed tube at 100° for 15 hours. The solution is evaporated in vacuo and the residue is dissolved in 50 ml. of acetonitrile and filtered. Upon evaporation the desired product crystallizes. The product may be recrystallized from acetonitrile.
