Procedure: To a solution of 4-(benzyloxy)butan-1-ol (3.00 g), 6-(trifluoromethyl)pyrimidin-4-ol (3.00 g), and triphenylphosphine (5.25 g) in THF (30 mL) was added diisopropyl azodicarboxylate (4.05 g), and the mixture was stirred at room temperature for 30 minutes. The reaction mixture was concentrated under reduced pressure, and then the residue was purified by silica gel column chromatography (eluent: hexane/ethyl acetate=9/1) to obtain 4-[4-(benzyloxy)butoxy]-6-(trifluoromethyl)pyrimidine (2.83 g). The reaction mixture was concentrated under reduced pressure the residue was purified by silica gel column chromatography (eluent: hexane/ethyl acetate=9/1)

Procedure: Under reaction conditions as described in J. Org. Chem. 1997, 62, 1560, {[4-(vinyloxy)butoxy]methyl}benzene was obtained using 4-(benzyloxy)butan-1-ol as a starting material. That is, 1,10-phenanthroline (1.00 g) and palladium(II) acetate (2.50 g) were added to a mixture of ethyl vinyl ether (25 mL) and dichloromethane (15 mL), followed by stirring for 15 minutes, and then 4-(benzyloxy)butan-1-ol (5.00 g) was added thereto, followed by stirring at room temperature for 60 hours. The reaction mixture was purified by silica gel column chromatography (eluent: hexane/ethyl acetate=95/5) to obtain {[4-(vinyloxy)butoxy]methyl}benzene (3.24 g). by stirring at room temperature for 60 hours The reaction mixture was purified by silica gel column chromatography (eluent: hexane/ethyl acetate=95/5)

Procedure: 36.6 g (170 mmol) of pyridinium chlorochromate are placed at room temperature in 120 ml of dichloromethane under N2, and a solution of 20.4 g (113 mmol) of 4-benzyloxybutanol in 20 ml of dichloromethane is added. The reaction mixture rapidly becomes dark and the reaction is slightly exothermic. The reaction mixture is stirred at room temperature for 31/2 hours. The supernatant dichloromethane phase is decanted off and concentrated by evaporation in a rotary evaporator. The residue is filtered over 100 g of silica gel. The product fractions are concentrated by evaporation in a rotary evaporator and distilled under a high vacuum over a 10 cm Vigreux column. 4-benzyloxybutanal is obtained, b.p.0.1 =72°-73°. Procedure: 6 g (0.2 mol) of a sodium hydride dispersion (80% in white oil) are placed at room temperature in 120 ml of absolute dimethylformamide, and 22.2 ml (0.25 mol) of 1,4-butanediol are added dropwise. When the addition is complete, the mixture is stirred for a further 30 minutes at room temperature. 23.1 ml (0.2 mol) of benzyl chloride are then slowly added dropwise, a slight exothermic reaction being observed. The reaction mixture is stirred overnight at room temperature, water/ice is added, and the mixture is extracted twice with ether. The organic phases are washed with water and with saturated sodium chloride solution, combined, dried over MgSO4, filtered and concentrated by evaporation. The residue is subjected to fractional distillation under a water-jet vacuum over a 10 cm Vigreux column. 4-benzyloxybutanol is obtained, b.p.22= 161°-162°. Procedure: MsCl (2.48 mL, 32.1 mmol) was added slowly to a solution of 4-benzyloxy-butan-1-ol (5.26 g, 29.2 mmol) and Et3N (6.1 mL, 43 mmol) in CH2Cl2 (100 mL) at 0° C. (bath temp). The reaction mixture was stirred at rt for 2 h and then quenched with H2O (100 mL). The aqueous layer was extracted with CH2Cl2, dried (MgSO4), and concentrated in vacuo to give the title compound as a colorless liquid: yield 7.5 g (99%). quenched with H2O (100 mL) The aqueous layer was extracted with CH2Cl2 dried (MgSO4) concentrated in vacuo
