Procedure: A mixture of 2,3-dimethyl-4-nitropyridine-1-oxide (2.0 g), methyl ethyl ketone (30 ml), 2,2,3,3,3-pentafluoropropanol (3.05 ml), anhydrous potassium carbonate (3.29 g) and hexamethylphosphoric acid triamide (2.07 g) was heated at 70-80° C. with stirring for 4.5 days. Then, the insoluble matter was filtered off and the filtrate was concentrated. Water was added to the residue and the mixture was extracted with ethyl acetate. The extract layer was dried over magnesium sulfate, then the solvent was distilled off, and the residue was applied to a silica gel column (50 g). Elution with chloroform-methanol (10:1) and recrystallization from ethyl acetate-hexane gave 2.4 g of 2,3-dimethyl-4-(2,2,3,3,3-pentafluoropropoxy)pyridine-1-oxide as colorless needles. Melting point 148-149° C. Then, the insoluble matter was filtered off the filtrate was concentrated Water was added to the residue the mixture was extracted with ethyl acetate The extract layer was dried over magnesium sulfate the solvent was distilled off Elution with chloroform-methanol (10:1) and recrystallization from ethyl acetate-hexane

Procedure: To a solution of 5.00 g (0.027 mol) of 2-methyl-5-nitrobenzyl chloride and 21.3 g (0.135 mol) of 2,2,3,3,3-pentafluoropropanol in 16.5 ml of dimethylformamide, was added 2.29 g (0.041 mol) of KOH pellets and the solution was stirred overnight. Then dichloromethane was added and the salts were filtered out. The filtrate was made acid and then the solvents were distilled off. The residue was dissolved in a 9/1 (v/v) mixed solvent of hexane/ethyl acetate, washed with dilute hydrochloric acid, water and a saturated sodium chloride aqueous solution, and then dried over magnesium sulfate. The solvents were distilled off and the resulting oil was subjected to silica gel chromatography using hexane/ethyl acetate (19/1, v/v) as developing solvent to obtain 7.71 g of 3-(2,2,3,3,3-pentafluoropropoxy)methyl-4-methyl-1-nitrobenzene having a melting point of 53.5°-54.5° C. in a 95.5% yield. the salts were filtered out the solvents were distilled off The residue was dissolved in a 9/1 (v/v) mixed solvent of hexane/ethyl acetate washed with dilute hydrochloric acid, water a saturated sodium chloride aqueous solution, and then dried over magnesium sulfate The solvents were distilled off

Procedure: The same catalyst was used from Example 4 above. The reactor was cooled to 277° C. The alcohol (CF3CF2CH2OH) flow of 0.49 mL/hr (2.0 sccm, 3.3×10-8 m3 /s), the COCl2 flow of 3.0 sccm (5.0×10-8 m3 /s), the HF flow of 7.0 sccm (1.2×10-7 m3 /s), and an N2 flow of 2 sccm (3.3×10-8 m3 /s) were begun. The gaseous effluent was analyzed by GCMS and found to be 89.3-90.5% CF3CF2CH2F over a 2 hour period with no evidence for catalyst deactivation. over a 2 hour
