Procedure: An oven dried resealable Schlenk tube was evacuated and backfilled with argon and charged with palladium acetate (2.2 mg, 0.01 mmol, 1.0 mol %), 2-(di-tert-butylphosphino)biphenyl (6.0 mg, 0.02 mmol, 2.0 mol %), phenylboronic acid (183 mg, 1.5 mmol), potassium fluoride (174 mg, 3.0 mmol), and 2-bromobenzyl alcohol (187 mg, 1.0 mmol). The tube was evacuated and backfilled with argon, and THF (1 mL) was added through a rubber septum. The tube was sealed with a teflon screwcap, and the reaction mixture was stirred at room temperature until the starting aryl bromide had been completely consumed as judged by GC analysis. The reaction mixture was then diluted with ether (30 mL), filtered through celite, and concentrated. The crude material was purified by flash chromatography on silica gel to afford 153 mg (83%) of the title compound. Procedure: Into a 250 milliliter reaction flask equipped with a magnetic stirrer was added 10.04 grams (0.044 moles) of 3,4,5-trichloronitrobenzene, 8.16 grams (0.044 moles) of 2-phenylbenzyl alcohol, 1.29 grams (0.004 moles) of tetra-N-butylammonium bromide, 80 milliliters of toluene and aqueous sodium hydroxide (5.28 grams in 6.6 milliliters of water). The resulting mixture was stirred vigorously at ambient temperature overnight. The mixture was then diluted with water and filtered. The layers were separated and the organic layer was washed twice with water and finally once with a saturated aqueous sodium chloride solution. After drying over anhydrous sodium sulfate, the mixture was concentrated under vacuum to give a red-orange oil which was stirred into hexane. Crystallization from the hexane and filtration afforded a yellow-orange powder having a melting point of 83.0° C.-84.5° C. Procedure: A stirred solution of 58.9 g (0.319 mole) of 2-biphenylmethanol and 6 ml of concentrated sulfuric acid in 67 ml of aqueous 48% hydrobromic acid was heated under reflux for 5 hours. The reaction mixture was cooled to ambient temperature, poured into ice-water, and the resulting mixture extracted with three portions of 100 ml each of diethyl ether. The combined extracts were washed with 50 ml of a saturated aqueous solution of sodium bicarbonate, then with 50 ml of water. The organic layer was dried with magnesium sulfate, filtered and the filtrate concentrated under reduced pressure to give 76.8 g of 2-(bromomethyl)biphenyl as a residual oil. The nmr and ir spectra were consistent with the proposed structure. under reflux for 5 hours the resulting mixture extracted with three portions of 100 ml each of diethyl ether The combined extracts were washed with 50 ml of a saturated aqueous solution of sodium bicarbonate The organic layer was dried with magnesium sulfate filtered the filtrate concentrated under reduced pressure
