Procedure: A mixture of 4′-{[5-oxo-4-(4-oxocyclohexyl)-7-propyl-4,5-dihydro[1,2,4]triazolo[1,5-a]pyrimidin-6-yl]methyl}biphenyl-2-carbonitrile (0.75 g), cyclopentane-1,2-diol (0.42 g), p-toluenesulfonic acid monohydrate (0.018 g) and toluene (30 mL) was subjected to an azeotropic dehydration reaction by stirring at 110° C. for 16 hr in a reaction vessel equipped with a Dean-stark trap. The reaction mixture was concentrated, and the obtained residue was purified by silica gel column chromatography to give the title compound as a colorless solid (1.2 g, 100%). was subjected to an azeotropic dehydration reaction equipped with a Dean-stark trap The reaction mixture was concentrated the obtained residue was purified by silica gel column chromatography

Procedure: A 1-liter, three neck, round bottom flask equipped with magnetic stirrer, internal thermometer, addition funnel, condenser, argon supply, and heating mantle, is flushed with argon. Then 1,2-cyclopentanediol (about 306 g, about 3 moles, Aldrich) is added and boron trifluoride diethyl etherate (about 0.14 g, about 0.01 moles, cis-trans isomer mixture, Aldrich) is added. Then the reaction mixture is held at about 10-40° C. as cyclopentene oxide (about 84 g. about 1 mole, Aldrich) is added dropwise with stirring until all the cyclopentene oxide has reacted. The reaction mixture is neutralized with sodium hydroxide, and the liquid is fractionally distilled under vacuum to recover the excess cyclopentanediol. The desired ether is obtained as a residue. Optionally, it is purified by further vacuum distillation.
