Procedure: To a vigourosly stirred, Et2O (100 mL) solution of 2-amino-4-chlorobenzonitrile (1.00 g, 6.55 mmol) cooled in an ice-H2O bath was added MeMgCl (3.0 M in THF, 6.5 mL, 19.7 mmol) dropwise over 5 min. During that time the reaction became a thick yellow suspension. Stirring was continued at the temperature for 1 h before the cooling bath was removed and the reaction stirred for 21 h at rt. The resultant light yellow suspension cooled to −60° C. and treated with aq HCl (5 M, 8 mL, 40 mmol) dropwise over ˜3 min. The mixture was allowed to warm slowly to rt within the cooling bath. Later more aq HCl (5 M, 6.5 mL, 33 mmol) was added. The Et2O layer was separated, the aq phase was basicified (pH 4-5) by addition of solid KOH and later extracted with EtOAc (3×). The Et2O and EtOAc layers were combined, dried (Na2SO4) and concentrated under reduced pressure to afford the title material which was used without further purification; 1H NMR (400 MHz, CDCl3) δ 7.63 (d, J=8.4 Hz, 1H), 6.65 (d, J=2.0 Hz, 1H), 6.60 (dd, J=2.0 Hz, 8.0 Hz, 1H), 6.40 (br, 2H), 2.55 (s, 3H); MS (ES+): m/z 170.07 (100) [MH+]; HPLC: tR=3.12 min (OpenLynx, polar—5 min). Stirring was removed the reaction stirred for 21 h at rt to warm slowly to rt within the cooling bath The Et2O layer was separated by addition of solid KOH later extracted with EtOAc (3×) dried (Na2SO4) concentrated under reduced pressure

Procedure: Acetophenone (0.66 mL, 5.69 mmol) was added to 1-(2-amino-4-chlorophenyl)ethanone (0.868 g, 5.69 mmol) and [Hbim]BF4 (1.50 g, 7.08 mmol) under Ar. The reaction mixture was heated at 100° C. for 57 h then cooled to rt and partitioned between EtOAc and H2O. The aq layer was extracted with EtOAc. The combined organics were dried (Na2SO4) and concentrated under reduced pressure. Purification by flash chromatography on SiO2 (70 g, EtOAc in hexanes 0:100→1:40→1:30) afforded a lightly colored oil. The material was dissolved in DCM (100 mL) and stirred with PS-Ts-NHNH2 (2.07 g, 2.87 mmol/g, 5.94 mmol) for 2.5 d at rt and then with MP-carbonate (˜0.25 g, 2.74 mmol/g, 0.68 mmol) for 4 h. The resins were removed by filtration through Celite. The residue and Celite were rinsed with DCM multiple times. The filtrate was concentrated under reduced pressure to provide the title compound as a light yellow oil; 1H NMR (400 MHz, CDCl3) δ 8.18-8.12 (m, 3H), 7.92 (d, J=8.4 Hz, 1H), 7.71 (d, J=0.8 Hz, 1H), 7.54-7.46 (m, 4H), 2.75 (s, 3H); MS (ES+): m/z 254.24 (35) [MH+]; HPLC: tR=3.82 min (OpenLynx, nonpolar—5 min). then cooled to rt partitioned between EtOAc and H2O The aq layer was extracted with EtOAc The combined organics were dried (Na2SO4) concentrated under reduced pressure Purification by flash chromatography on SiO2 (70 g, EtOAc in hexanes 0:100→1:40→1:30) afforded a lightly colored oil The resins were removed by filtration through Celite The residue and Celite were rinsed with DCM multiple times The filtrate was concentrated under reduced pressure
