Procedure: A solution of 51.4 g (0.33 mole) 8-amino-2-naphthol in 500 ml pyridine was cooled to 0° and treated with 108.0 g (0.33 mole) hexadecanesulfonyl chloride. The mixture was stirred briefly at 0° C. and overnight at room temperature, then poured into ice water containing 500 ml concentrated hydrochloric acid. The solid was collected, washed, dried, and recrystallized from benzene to give 100 g of product, m.p. 103.5°-107° C. The solid was collected washed dried recrystallized from benzene

Procedure: The amine product of Reaction Example 8, N-(5-amino-2-methoxyphenyl)-2,2,5-trimethyl-β-oxo-1,3-dioxane-5-propanamide, (18.5 parts) and N,N-dimethylaniline (8.5 parts) are combined in tetrahydrofuran (250 parts) and a solution of 1-hexadecylsulfonyl chloride (17.9 parts) dissolved in tetrahydrofuran (25 parts) is added dropwise with stirring, ca. 0.5 hr. The reaction is allowed to stand several hours and subsequently poured into cold water (600 parts) containing concentrated hydrochloric acid (5 parts). The crude product is extracted with ethyl ether and the ethereal layer washed once with sodium bicarbonate solution, once with water, dried over magnesium sulfate, filtered and subsequently flash evaporated in vacuo to give a light tan product in 90% of theoretical yield. Analytical samples are crystallized from ethyl alcohol, m.p. 83-85° C. Proton NMR and combustion analysis are consistent with those values predicted for the desired product. Combustion Analysis for C33H56N2O6S--Calculated: C, 65.1%; H, 9.3%; N, 4.6%; S, 5.3%. Found: C, 65.6%; H, 9.1; N, 4.4%; S, 5.0%. is added dropwise to stand several hours The crude product is extracted with ethyl ether the ethereal layer washed once with sodium bicarbonate solution, once with water dried over magnesium sulfate filtered subsequently flash evaporated in vacuo to give a light tan product in 90% of theoretical yield Analytical samples are crystallized from ethyl alcohol, m.p. 83-85° C

Procedure: To a solution of 5.33 g (0.025 mol) of 4,5-dimethoxy-2-nitrobenzyl alcohol and 8.15 g (0.025 mol) hexadecanesulfonyl chloride in 100 ml of acetone, dicyclohexylamine (5 ml, slight excess) was added via motor driven syringe over 30 minutes. After the addition was complete, the reaction was stirred an additional 30 minutes. The precipitated dicyclohexylamine hydrochloride was removed by filtration and the acetone filtrate reduced in volume in vacuo until most of the product had precipitated (yield 9.5 g, m.p. 81°-82° C.). over 30 minutes After the addition The precipitated dicyclohexylamine hydrochloride was removed by filtration had precipitated (yield 9.5 g, m.p. 81°-82° C.)

Procedure: To a stirred solution of 7.65 g (0.05 mol) of 2-nitrobenzyl alcohol in 75 ml of benzene containing 5.05 g (0.05 ml) of triethylamine was added 16.25 g (0.05 mol of hexadecanesulfonyl chloride. The mixture was stirred an additional four hours. The mixture was evaporated to dryness in vacuo and the solid taken up into a mixture of ether and water. The ether layer was separated and dried over MgSO4. Evaporation of the ether gave a solid which was crystallized from absolute ethanol (yield 14.3 g, m.p. 63°-65° C.).
