Procedure: A 4.7 M aqueous solution of sodium hydroxide (50 mL) was added into a stirred, ice-cooled solution of ethyl glycinate hydrochloride (32.19 g, 0.23 mole) in water (50 mL). Then, ethyl acrylate (23.1 g, 0.23 mole) was added and the mixture was stirred at room temperature until completion of the reaction was ascertained by TLC. After 19 h the solution was partitioned with dichloromethane (3×100 mL). The organic layer was dried with anhydrous sodium sulfate, filtered and evaporated. The residue was distilled to afford AA (28.8 g, 61%). After 19 h the solution was partitioned with dichloromethane (3×100 mL) The organic layer was dried with anhydrous sodium sulfate filtered evaporated The residue was distilled to afford AA (28.8 g, 61%)

Procedure: To the product of Step A, 1-a, (5.10 g, 25.1 mmol) in CH2Cl2 (50 mL) was added pent-4-enoyl chloride (2.83 mL, 25.1 mmol, 98% purity) and NEt3 (4.20 mL, 30.1 mmol) at 5° C. The reaction stirred about 18 hours and was then diluted with CH2Cl2, washed with aq Na2CO3 (2 M) and brine, dried (Na2SO4), filtered and concentrated to afford the product, 1-b. washed with aq Na2CO3 (2 M) and brine dried (Na2SO4) filtered concentrated

Procedure: To a mixture of 49 g of ethyl N-(ethoxycarbonylmethyl)-β-alaninate and 30 ml of water cooled to -10° is added dropwise 27.6 ml of ethyl chloroformate followed by a solution of 12.7 g of sodium carbonate in 50 ml of water. The mixture is warmed to room temperature then heated at 55° for 50 minutes. The mixture is cooled, extracted with toluene, the extract is washed with 2N hydrochloric acid and water. The extract is dried over sodium sulfate, filtered, concentrated and distilled in vacuo to yield ethyl N-(ethoxycarbonylmethyl)-N-(ethoxycarbonyl)-β-alaninate. cooled to -10° then heated at 55° for 50 minutes The mixture is cooled extracted with toluene the extract is washed with 2N hydrochloric acid and water The extract is dried over sodium sulfate filtered concentrated distilled in vacuo
