Procedure: To a stirred solution of methyl 2,2-diphenylacetate (0.5 g, 1 equiv) in anhydrous EtOH (150 mL) was added hydrazine hydrate (8 mL) and heated to reflux. Stirring was then continued for 1 hour. The reaction mixture was then cooled and the solvents removed under reduced pressure. The crude oil was diluted with EtOAc and washed with H2O and the organic phase dried over Na2SO4, filtered, and the solvents removed under reduced pressure to yield a yellow oil (0.97 g, 97%) that was used without further purification. heated to reflux The reaction mixture was then cooled the solvents removed under reduced pressure The crude oil was diluted with EtOAc washed with H2O the organic phase dried over Na2SO4 filtered the solvents removed under reduced pressure

Procedure: To a stirred solution of 2,2-diphenylacetic acid (1 gram, 1 equiv) in dry MeOH (50 mL) was added sulfuric acid (0.4 mL) dropwise and heated to reflux. Stirring was then continued for 3 hours. The reaction mixture was then cooled and poured into saturated aqueous NaHCO3 and extracted with EtOAc. The combined organic fractions were dried over Na2SO4, filtered, and concentrated under reduced pressure to yield an oil (1.0 g, 93%) that was not further purified. heated to reflux The reaction mixture was then cooled extracted with EtOAc The combined organic fractions were dried over Na2SO4 filtered concentrated under reduced pressure

Procedure: 4.8 milliliters KN(SiCH3)2 were dropped into 5 milliliters (C6H5)2CHCOOCH3 in tetrahydrofuran at -78° C. and the resulting yellow suspension was stirred for 45 minutes. 1.2 molar equivalents N-fluorobenzenesulfonimide prepared according to Example 1 above in 4 milliliters tetrahydrofuran were dropped into the mixture and stirring continued at -78° C. for 1 hour. The mixture was allowed to warm up to room temperature, quenched with ammonium chloride, and acidified with 0.1N hydrogen chloride. Extraction with dichloromethane, drying, and evaporation were followed by purification on a silica gel column. Procedure: To a 500 mL three-opening flask was slowly added a solution of diisobutylaluminum hydride in toluene (282 mL, 1 mol/L) at −30° C. After stirring, to the resulting mixture was slowly added a solution of methyl 2,2-diphenylacetate (21 g, 92.8 mmol) in dichloromethane dropwisely. After the completion of dropwise addition, the reaction was conducted at 25° C. for 12 hours. After the completion of reaction monitored by TLC, to the resulting mixture was slowly added methanol (10 mL), dichloromethane (100 mL) and an aqueous sodium hydroxide solution (100 mL, 1 mol/L) at −20° C. After the completion of reaction, to the reaction solution was added dichloromethane for extraction. The organic phase was washed with water, dried over anhydrous sodium sulfate, and evaporated to remove the solvent to produce 2,2-diphenyl ethanol (17 g) in a yield of 92.4%. After the completion of dropwise addition After the completion of reaction at −20° C After the completion of reaction for extraction The organic phase was washed with water dried over anhydrous sodium sulfate evaporated to remove the solvent
