Procedure: To a stirred solution of 154 g (1 mol) of 4-methylmercaptobenzyl alcohol in 1 liter of dry benzene was added dropwise 80 mL 1.1 mol) of thionyl chloride. The mixture immediately turned blue. After the addition of the thionyl chloride was completed, the mixture was heated at reflux for 2 hours. After cooling the benzene and excess thionyl chloride were distilled at ambient pressure. The product was distilled in vacuo at 105° C. (0.5 mm), to yield 160 g (93%) of water clear liquid. the mixture was heated at reflux for 2 hours were distilled at ambient pressure The product was distilled in vacuo at 105° C. Procedure: Sodium borohydride (3.78 g) was added to isopropyl alcohol (50 ml) and the mixture was stirred under ice-cooling. Thereto was dropwise added 4-(methylthio)benzaldehyde (15 g) and the mixture was stirred at room temperature for 30 minutes. The solvent was distilled away and water was added to the residue. The mixture was extracted with ethyl acetate. The organic layer was washed with saturated brine and dried over anhydrous sodium sulfate. The solvent was distilled away and the residue obtained was recrystallized from hexane-ethyl acetate to give the subject compound (15 g) as white crystals. cooling the mixture was stirred at room temperature for 30 minutes The solvent was distilled away water was added to the residue The mixture was extracted with ethyl acetate The organic layer was washed with saturated brine dried over anhydrous sodium sulfate The solvent was distilled away the residue obtained was recrystallized from hexane-ethyl acetate

Procedure: In a sulfonating flask, 50 g (0.32 mol) of 4-methylthiobenzyl alcohol and 46.3 g (0.32 mol) of methylsulfonyl chloride are dissolved in 250 ml of toluene and, with cooling at 10° C., 32.5 g (0.32 mol) of triethylamine are added dropwise. The reaction mixture is then heated to room temperature and stirred overnight. 400 ml of 2N hydrochloric acid are then added to the reaction solution slowly and with cooling. The phases are separated and the organic phase is washed with water, dried over MgSO4 and concentrated in a rotary evaporator. 60 g (80%) of 4-methylthiobenzyl alcohol methanesulfonate are obtained in the form of a yellow oil. The reaction mixture is then heated to room temperature with cooling The phases are separated the organic phase is washed with water dried over MgSO4 concentrated in a rotary evaporator

Procedure: 4-Methylsulfanylbenzyl alcohol (30.5 g; 0.2 mol) was dissolved in dichloromethane (180 ml). A solution of thionyl chloride (23.8 g; 0.2 mol) in dichloromethane (120 ml) was added dropwise to the initial charge, which was kept under reflux. The reaction mixture was stirred under reflux for a further 2 h. The solution was cooled to room temperature, washed with H2O (2×250 ml), dried over Na2SO4 and concentrated. The oily residue (6) was purified by column chromatography (Al2O3, CH2Cl2). initial charge under reflux under reflux for a further 2 h washed with H2O (2×250 ml) dried over Na2SO4 concentrated The oily residue (6) was purified by column chromatography (Al2O3, CH2Cl2)

Procedure: A solution of thionyl chloride (47.6 g) in methylene chloride is slowly added to a solution of 4-(methylthio)benzyl alcohol (50.0 g) in pyridine (37.2 g) such that the temperature never exceeds 25° C. After the addition is complete the mixture is stirred an additional 2 hours at room temperature, then washed with water, dried, and the solvents removed. The resulting red oil is mixed with hexane which is decanted and evaporated to give 49.6 g of 4-(methylthio)benzyl chloride as a yellow oil, suitable for use in the reaction described next below. After the addition washed with water dried the solvents removed The resulting red oil is mixed with hexane which is decanted evaporated
