Procedure: The experimental method described in Example 1 is used, and 2,746 g (10 moles) of technical grade stearic acid and the catalyst phase (342 g) obtained in Example 1 are initially taken. 1,089 g (11 moles) of gaseous phosgene are then introduced. The product phase contains 2,930 g (99.9% yield) of stearyl chloride having a purity of 97% (determined by IR spectroscopy); the iodine color number is 30.

Procedure: 25.6 g of N-(3-dimethylaminopropyl)-p-dimethylaminobenzamide (0.103 mole) from Example 1 and 28.6 g of stearylchloride (0.099 mole) were melted together and kept at 130° C. for 3 hours. Product was crystallized from 250 ml of methylethylketone. Yield was 42 g (77% of theoretical yield). Procedure: A 1 l jacketed glass reactor with a glass paddle stirrer and immersed tube for reactant metering is initially charged with 220 g of N-n-octylalkylpyridinium chloride (prepared according to Example 2) and adjusted to a temperature of 150° C. 447 g of n-octadecanol are introduced uniformly via an immersed tube over 5 hours. Gaseous hydrogen chloride is metered in via an immersed tube in a slight stoichiometric excess over the entire reaction time, and the water of reaction formed is simultaneously removed via distillation. The performance of the reaction and the workup of the reaction mixture are analogous to Example 4a. After a total reaction time of 8 h (including 3 hours of postreaction), the conversion based on n-octadecanol is 99.8%. adjusted to a temperature of 150° C formed is simultaneously removed via distillation The performance of the reaction After a total reaction time of 8 h (including 3 hours of postreaction)

Procedure: Under a nitrogen atmosphere, p-hydroxythiophenol (126 g) was dissolved in N,N-dimethylformamide (600 ml) and thereto was added potassium carbonate (152 g). Thereto was added octadecyl chloride (318 g), followed by heating at 80° C. for 2 hours. After completion of the reaction, the reaction mixture was poured into water to precipitate a white solid. Thereto was added 5% hydrochloric acid to adjust the pH to acidic state and then, the white solid was filtered off under reduced pressure and then recrystallized from methyl ethyl ketone to obtain the desired product (261 g). Yield 70%; m.p. 95° C. After completion of the reaction to precipitate a white solid Thereto was added 5% hydrochloric acid the white solid was filtered off under reduced pressure recrystallized from methyl ethyl ketone

Procedure: Into a 300-mL flask equipped with a mechanical stirrer, N2 inlet, pressure-equalizing addition funnel which is thermostated in oil bath, were added 14.8 g of sodium amide (0.38 mol) and 64.0 mL of 4-methylpyridine (61.1 g, 0.656 mol). The mixture was stirred under N2 for 1 h while a color change to deep red was observed. A 110-mL sample of n-octadecyl chloride (95.0 g; 0.33 mol) was added to the rapidly stirred reaction mixture over a period of 1.5 h. Shortly after addition was begun, the reaction mixture was warmed to 60° C. to prevent solidification and was subsequently stirred overnight at 100° C. The reaction mixture was cooled to room temperature, diluted with 200 mL of chloroform, washed three times with 200 mL of H2O, and reduced to dryness with the rotary evaporator. The resultant dark brown product was vacuum distilled three times at 0.07 mmHg to finally afford 48.8 g of constant-boiling (180° C. (0.07 mmHg)), white, waxy solid (0.141 mol, 43% yield based on n-octadecyl chloride). Anal. Calcd for C24H43N: C, 83.41; H, 12.54; N, 4.05. Found: C, 83.6; H, 12.7; N, 4.0. MS (ESIMS): m/z: 345.3.
