Procedure: A weighed pressure reactor (available from Parr Instrument Co., Moline, Ill.) is charged with dichloromethane (100 mL) and is then cooled using liquid nitrogen. Methylamine is introduced from a cylinder via a stainless steel tube that is connected to a valve on the reactor. The reactor is periodically weighed, and methylamine is added until 20 g have been added. Trifluoromethanesulfonylfluoride is then introduced into the reactor from a cylinder via a stainless steel tube until 97.9 g have been added. The pressure reactor is then sealed and is placed in a motorized rocker and is rocked and allowed to warm to room temperature. After a period of about 6 hours after the reactor reaches room temperature, it is slowly vented to the atmosphere by opening the valve. The product residue is washed with 10 weight percent aqueous HCl and the organic phase is then dried over MgSO4. The mixture is filtered and the solvent is removed from the filtrate using a rotary evaporator to afford the product. is then cooled is connected to a valve on the reactor have been added have been added The pressure reactor is then sealed The product residue is washed with 10 weight percent aqueous HCl the organic phase is then dried over MgSO4 The mixture is filtered the solvent is removed from the filtrate a rotary evaporator to afford the product

Procedure: To a solution of 21.0 g 2-(9-fluorenyl)ethanol, in 495 mL toluene was added dropwise with stirring 40 mL of a 2.5M solution of n-butyllithium in hexane. The resulting solution of Li{flu-CH2—CH2—O} was cooled to below −25° C. Then, 16.7 g CF3SO2F was condensed into the reaction mixture. Tile temperature was allowed to rise to 25° C. and the reaction mixture was stirred for 6 h. Unreacted CF3SO2F was removed by pumping about 10 mL of liquid into a dry ice-cooled trap. To the solution of flu-CH2—CH2—OSO2CF3 thus obtained was added a solution of 0.1 mole indenyllithium in 100 mL diethyl ether. After stirring for 12 h, solvents were removed under vacuum and the residue recrystallized in air from boiling heptane. The yield of white microcrystalline solid, mp 79-80° C., was 8.9 g (29%). Spectroscopic and chemical analysis confirmed the identity of the desired compound. condensed into the reaction mixture to rise to 25° C. was removed cooled trap To the solution of flu-CH2—CH2—OSO2CF3 thus obtained After stirring for 12 h solvents were removed under vacuum the residue recrystallized in air

Procedure: 2,2,3,3-tetrafluoropropan-1-ol (244.3 g, 1.85 mol, obtained from Sinochem Corp.), triethylamine (187.2 g, 1.85 mol, obtained from Aldrich Chemical Co.) and 500 mL of chloroform were combined in a 2-liter Parr pressure reactor and sealed. The reactor temperature was set to −10° C. Trifluoromethanesulfonyl fluoride (281.33 g, 1.85 mol, obtained from 3M Company) was added at such a rate that the temperature did not exceed −5° C. Once the addition was complete, the mix was held at −10° C. for 45 minutes. The reaction mix was then emptied and washed with 2×500 mL portions of water and 1×250 mL portion of 1N HCl. GC analysis of the reaction mixture indicated a 97 percent conversion to the product. The chloroform solvent was removed by rotary evaporation. The product was dried over anhydrous magnesium sulfate which was then filtered from the product. sealed was set to −10° C did not exceed −5° C Once the addition The reaction mix washed with 2×500 mL portions of water and 1×250 mL portion of 1N HCl The chloroform solvent was removed by rotary evaporation The product was dried over anhydrous magnesium sulfate which was then filtered from the product
